SECULAR PHARISEES

Secular--- Worldly rather than spiritual Pharisee---A hypocritically self-righteous person

Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues.” -Mathew 23

I hate religion, and I bristle at religious people. According to the dictionary, religion is “a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects. Christianity, in its purist form, is a way of life, not a set of rules and regulations. It is a relationship, not a religion.

Following Jesus is an issue of the heart. Religion is an issue of the head.

Jesus also hated religion. He died to deliver us from it. He warned of the “religious” Pharisees who “And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.”

All “religion” is man centered, controlled by the thoughts of the mind, rather than the conviction of the heart. Jesus warned us, that “These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.” Leaders of religions create rules which they then require the people follow.

Tithing is not a New Testament principle, yet thousands of pastors preach it. Tithing is “religious,” while “freely giving” is Christ-like. Tithing is of the head; “freely giving” is of the heart. Just as there are “religious” laws created by men, there are also secular laws created by men. Both are designed to control people.

Making law creates power. Wherever the law exists there is a need for someone to enforce it. Enforcement of the law is required for those who “violate” the laws of man. The conscience was created by God as a means of self-government. The law is of the head. The conscience is of the heart.

I hope this is making sense.

Jesus delivered us from the “curse of the law.” He told us He would no longer write new laws on paper, but rather, He would write the law on our heart. True freedom is an issue of the heart.

Pharisees are hypocritical leaders of any form of man-made government. A reading of Mathew 15 and Mathew 23 will show you how to spot them. They include:

Taking money from the people. Matt. 15:5
Teaching un-Biblical laws. Matt 5:9
Not living what they teach. Matt 23:3
Teaching extra-Biblical laws. Matt. 23:4
Seeking the approval of men. Matt: 23:5-7
Keeping the followers locked up. Matt 23:13
Are greedy thieves. Matt. 23:14
Seeking converts for greedy gain. Matt. 23:15
Putting men under bondage. Matt. 23:16
Ignoring the most important issues. Matt. 23:23
Outward holiness hides inward evil. Matt. 23: 25-28
Fighting against direction and correction. Matt. 23: 29-30.

Although Jesus was referring to the “religious” folks, the spirit of a Pharisee is alive and well in the secular world as well. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty. Where the Spirit of the Lord is not, there is bondage.

Religion is bondage to man-enforced rules. Christianity without the Spirit, is no different than government without God. Both bow their knee to the edicts of sinful men.

Let’s turn our eyes to the secular world. It, too, is full of “Secular (worldly)” Pharisees. By applying the 12 characteristics listed above you will see that man-made systems always share the same qualities.

Think I am wrong? Let’s apply the test.

Do the fruits of a Pharisee apply in the political realm? Do the “political Pharisees (politicians)” take money from the people, teach un-Biblical (constitutional) law, fail to live what they teach, make extra-constitutional law, seek the approval of men, keep their followers locked up, are greedy thieves, put men under bondage, ignore the most important issues, have outward goodness hiding inward evil, fight against direction and correction?

Where the Spirit of the Lord is…

How about lawyers, judges, and the legal profession? Are there “Legal Pharisees?” Do lawyers take money from the people, teach un-Biblical (constitutional) law, fail to live what they teach, make extra-constitutional law, seek the approval of men, keep their followers locked up, are greedy thieves, put men under bondage, ignore the most important issues, have outward goodness hiding inward evil, fight against direction and correction?

Where the Spirit of the Lord is…

How about the bankers? Do they take money from the people, teach un-Biblical (constitutional) law, fail to live what they teach, make extra-constitutional law, seek the approval of men, keep their followers locked up, are greedy thieves, put men under bondage, ignore the most important issues, have outward goodness hiding inward evil, fight against direction and correction?

Where the Spirit of the Lord is…

What about our medical profession? Are our Doctors guilty of taking money from the people, teaching un-Biblical (constitutional) law, failing to live what they teach, making extra-constitutional law, seeking the approval of men, keeping their followers locked up, being greedy thieves, putting men under bondage, ignoring the most important issues, have outward goodness hiding inward evil, fighting against direction and correction?

Where the Spirit of the Lord is…

Is there a spirit of the Pharisees in our educational system? Do our schools take money from the people, teach un-Biblical (constitutional) law, fail to live what they teach, make extra-constitutional law, seek the approval of men, keep their followers locked up, are greedy thieves, put men under bondage, ignore the most important issues, have outward goodness hiding inward evil, fight against direction and correction?

Where the Spirit of the Lord is…there is liberty.

Every system where the “Spirit of the Lord” is not in command operates under the same pharisaical spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that guides us unto all truth. The Spirit brings liberty, the law brings bondage.

Those who think that the following of Christian values does not affect the culture need only look at the man-made organizations that control our lives. The Kingdom of God is in constant conflict with the kingdom of darkness.

By our rejection of Jesus and His Kingdom we merely substitute secular pharisaical leadership in a secular kingdom. As the old saying goes, “you gotta serve somebody.”

“All societies of men must be governed in some way or other. The less they may have of stringent State Government, the more they must have of individual self-government. The less they rely on public law or physical force, the more they must rely on private moral restraint. Men, in a word, must necessarily be controlled, either by a power within them, or by a power without them; either by the Word of God, or by the strong arm of man; either by the Bible, or by the bayonet. -Robert Winthrop

The Kingdom of God is within you. Only those Kingdom Principles can ever assure us true liberty.
