THE SPIRIT OF A PIONEER

America needs pioneers today more than ever. They won’t wear cowboy hats, ride horses and covered wagons. They won’t jump in spaceships and shoot for the moon. But the work they do will one day save this nation for our children and grandchildren.

I’d like to encourage you…and coach you a bit…today. Those of you who are pioneers know who you are. The work you are doing seems to be going unnoticed but everyday it pushes back the darkness a little more.

“Let us not grow weary in well doing for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.” Let that promise from the Apostle Paul lighten your step. Good will eventually win. Keep doing what is right. Stop listening to those who sit on their butts and offer criticism.

Perhaps you never really recognized yourself as a pioneer, but you are. A pioneer ventures into unfamiliar territory and paves a way for others. I don’t care who you are we are all where we are because of the efforts of a trailblazer who came before you. You are walking on the path he cut.

But just like the yard at your house, if the grass is left unattended it will soon be overgrown requiring a re-cutting of previously cleared land. The Bible calls the overgrowth “tares.” It seems as if the tares have overtaken America.

That is why there is such a great need for modern-day pioneers.

I’ve lived the last dozen years as one. This is not a self-congratulatory commentary but one that oozes with experience. My wife and I have received a PHD in rejection. Once we realized that it was not US that was being rejected but rather the ONE that we serve that was being booted out the back door, we were able to use the rejection as a strange form of fuel that propelled us deeper into the wilderness.

Thank God for the Wilderness. That is where the most valuable lessons in life are learned.

At the risk of seeming presumptuous for thinking I could help you, I would like to share with you some valuable lessons that we learned on our journey. Knowing what lies ahead often makes the trip easier to deal with.

I am not talking about financial pioneers, although the principles apply, but I am referring more to political, spiritual, cultural path-cutting that will aid in leading America out of the darkness.

Are you ready? Here is what you can expect as you cut a path to common sense for those who are often reluctant to follow.

You Must Not Be Afraid of Risk

Fear can be paralyzing and it is often the fear of failure that prevents victory. All great plays and great players are a result of having taken a risk. If you always do what you have always done you will only get what you have already got. Change is scary. But change is necessary. Be willing to lay it all on the line. Few are willing. The spoils go to the courageous.

You Must Not Be Paralyzed by Comfort

The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. If nothing gets done, nothing changes. Peace in your time does not ensure peace in your grandchild’s time. Sitting in the lap of Delilah is deadly. Ask Samson. Climb out on that limb. That’s where the fruit hangs.

Don’t Rely on Peer Approval

“Everyone is doing it” is a lie. There is nothing as sad as men who have sight yet have no vision. Vision is the ability to see beyond the horizon. Most can’t see beyond the end of their nose. Truth is not popular and what is popular is usually not truth. If everyone saw it there would be no need for pioneers. Press on…even when others complain.

Don’t Live off of the Praise of Others

Public praise is intoxicating and intoxication deadens one’s senses. No one should need recognition for doing what is right. Be quick to share the credit and quicker yet to accept the blame. It is amazing what can be done if no one cares who gets the credit. In less than a week Jesus went from a welcoming parade to Calvary. Everyone deserted Him. Still he pressed on. He was the ultimate pioneer.

Make Mistakes so Others Don’t Have to

Failure is a great teacher. Embrace it, learn from it, and allow it to propel you forward. Failure is never final. You keep fighting and let others keep the score. The game isn’t over until the clock runs out. Don’t believe what others say about you…both good and bad.

Move Forward Even When in Doubt

Retreat is rarely a good option. Changing courses is wise, but forfeiting hard-fought ground is not an option. A moving target is hard to hit. Keep moving and the other side will spend valuable time responding. Set the tempo, swing on your way down. Winners bounce. Keep moving forward. Don’t back down.

Keep Your Eye on the Prize

Be internally motivated and you won’t be externally controlled. Write your vision down. Place it on your refrigerator where you can constantly see it. Don’t be distracted by the little foxes. Not every play is a touchdown. Not every game is a victory. Be persistent. Persistence is more valuable than talent. Tenacity leads to victory.

Pray On the Way

Prayer is not enough. Prayer can change things but prayer without action is a crapshoot. Jesus prayed in the garden and then went to the cross. His prayer didn’t save us, His action did. Prayer is the gas in your tank. Prayer drives the action. God so loved the world that HE DID SOMETHING…and so must we. Prayer are the power lines along which the current runs.

Find a Like-Minded Co-Worker

Jesus sent them out in pairs. It is not good for man to be alone. The enemy loves the lone wolf. The Lone Ranger had Tonto; Batman had Robin, David had Jonathan and Starsky had Hutch. One can scatter a thousand, two can scatter ten thousand. Two is better than one and a cord of three strands is not easily broken. God never loses.

Believe in the Supernatural Intervention of God

God responds to Faith. In fact, the Bible says “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.” Just showing up is often the most important part of the battle. Believe Him to intervene on your behalf. It is His promise. He chases after His Word.

Don’t Minimize the Importance of Your Efforts

Work as if everything is depending on you. Pray as if everything is depending on God. Rarely does a hero realize he is a hero until the event is over. Your life can change in an instant. God can breathe on your efforts and create a wild fire. Ask Charles Finney. Ask the Apostle Paul. John Adams said, “Duty is ours. The results belong to God.” DO something God can bless.

Stop listening to the nay-sayers. God is getting ready to do something great in America. Give him some clay to work with.

But understand this…sometimes good looks bad. In order for America to change something is going to have to shake us out of our lethargy. Be the agitator. Be the alarm clock. Be the bell-ringer.

America needs pioneers. Press on my friends. Grab your sling-shot.

You never know which blow will bring down the wall.

America needs pioneers.

So the sheep don’t grow. They never develop their gifts. They want a pastor who will coach them but they only find pastors who want to control them. They grow bored, disgruntled, and end up leaving the church.
