Lately the world’s leaders, and the ruling class in general—bureaucrats, judges, Hollywood, college profs and teacher unions, and so on—are saying and doing increasingly irrational things. Whether it’s perverse and wrong-headed legislation like Obamacare, which destroys the prosperity of the country that enacts it, or just fatuous blather like calling joblessness “free agency” and claiming communism can solve the world’s problems, the big shots who stir the drink are stirring it bad.

How can anything turn out right for a country whose former Speaker of the House says being out of work is great because it will allow you more time to write poetry?

This is scary; and it reminds of me a certain Bible story that may explain what’s going on.

In I Kings, Chapter 22, God means to destroy Ahab, king of Israel, for his evil acts as king and man. The Lord wishes Ahab to go up against a powerful Syrian army and be destroyed. To that end, 400 prophets tell the king that if he attacks the Syrians at Ramoth-gilead, he will win a great victory.

But there is one prophet, and only one, who says otherwise.

“[B]ut I hate him,” says Ahab, “for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil” (v. 8).

What does the prophet say? “I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd” (v. 17).

He explains that, in a prophetic vision, he saw the Lord. “And the Lord said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gildead?” (v. 20) And a certain spirit answered, “I will persuade him… I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets… Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil concerning thee” (verses 21-23).

Note that although God did allow 400 prophets to lie to their king, to lure him to his death, He nevertheless revealed the truth to Ahab through the single prophet—whom Ahab promptly jailed.

He listened to the lying prophets, led his army to Ramoth-gilead, and was defeated and killed; “and the dogs licked up his blood” (v. 38).

In our own age of here and now, we have a single honest prophet who always tells the truth—not a man, but the Bible, God’s word.

But our own Ahabs in Washington, London, Ottawa and elsewhere have a million pet prophets who tell them what they want to hear: who tell them lies. The lying spirit is at work today—in the media, in the law courts, in our schools and colleges, in corporate boardrooms, and even in many of our churches.

What do the lying prophets tell our Ahabs?

“Keep spending the money. Make the government ever bigger, costlier, and more invasive. Enact laws that no one reads. Make it all up as you go along.

“Accept no limits. Freedom is sin, and sin is freedom! Ye shall be as gods, defining good and evil for yourselves. Gender is a social construct. The only boundaries are those which you yourselves imagine.

“Inflame the people with envy. Teach them to covet one another’s goods, and to hate anyone who has more than they do, and to despise those who have less. Terrify them with Global Warming—and promise to save them from it, if they’ll obey you in all things.

“The children belong to everyone, and the government’s the only thing we all belong to!

“You didn’t build that.

“There is nothing that can hold you back: for God is dead, or sleeping.”

The purpose of the lies that God permitted the prophets to tell was to tempt Ahab to destruction. The one truthful prophet, he ignored.

Ahab deserved what was done to him.

As for the rest of us, we follow Ahab at our peril.
