On Thursday, November 14, the President held a press conference in which he offered to make good on his promise, made repeatedly since 2009, embodied in this quote from his American Medical Association speech of June 15, 2009: “[N]o matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise to the American people: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period. If you like your health-care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health-care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what.” Having admitted that his statement was false, Obama proceeded in his press conference to promise that he would now make good on the earlier promise. Not so. He continues to lie.
The President is not taking any step to ensure that those 4.8 million Americans who have received notices that their health care plans are canceled will be able to keep those original plans. To the contrary, his is a transparently temporary political move that he knew at the time he made the statements in his press conference would likely result in few getting back their original plans and none keeping them beyond one year.
His offer is a ploy. He is offering to allow insurers to reinstate canceled plans for 12 months (just past the November 2014 mid-term elections). Beyond that, he is making no promises. So, even if insurers are predisposed to reinstate plans that no longer fit their post-Obamacare revisions (something they cannot be compelled to do absent legislation), they may only extend the plans for twelve months, meaning that the 4.8 million affected people will not be able to “keep [their] health-care plan[s], period.” They will have to buy more costly Obamacare plans (often with higher deductibles)one year from now to comply with the law. House bills that would allow them to retain their original insurance plans indefinitely into the future are ones Obama says he will veto. To be sure, he has no present intention of deviating from his original lie. If you like your health-care plan, you cannot keep it, period.
In other words, Obama is still reneging on his promises made from 2009 to 2013. He does so at a time when 50% of Americans believe that he knowingly lied when he made those infamous promises. Fully 59% say they do not trust the President’s statements.
Despite agreeing that it is “legitimate for [the American people] to expect me to have to win back some credibility on this” and a “whole range of these issues in general,” Obama has taken the underwhelming step of doing again precisely what caused him to offend Americans at the outset. He is still not leveling with the American people. He is still not telling them that his fix is only temporary and that they will be expected to buy Obamacare 12 months from now whether they like it or not. He is still not telling them that sign-ups are so low that Obamacare premiums will either be sky high (an effective major tax on Americans) or will implode, leaving those who sign-up for Obamacare without any insurance.

Indeed, Obama is a consummate con artist. He keeps telling people that they will receive “affordable care” through Obamacare and that every one of those not insured will be insured. Every indication is to the contrary. He stands atop an edifice of lies that is so immense and yet so fragile that it may soon collapse his entire presidency into one unmitigated disaster. The only thing we know to be true about Obama is that regardless of how many Americans are harmed as he pursueshis fool’s errand, he personally will come out on top. He will retire from the White House a far richer man and he will always enjoy free medical care at the taxpayers’ expense. Obama apparently pledges allegiance to the penultimate commandment in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
