IRAN'S PATH OF DESTRUCTION
By Attorney Jonathan
Emord Flush with $150 billion in assets arising from the lifting of sanctions and the equivalent of a green light from the West to develop an atomic bomb, the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon stockpile fissile material which it can supply to terrorist groups for incorporation into so-called “dirty bombs” (combinations of radioactive materials and conventional explosives). With the eventual capacity to arm short range ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads, Iran may act on a much shorter timetable by supplying in a clandestine way all of the radioactive elements desired by terrorist compatriots for use in dirty bombs. Those radioactive elements would then be dispersed via the detonation of dirty bombs in Israel, Europe, and the United States, creating zones of contamination in urban areas. With the trail back to Tehran provable only after the gathering of intelligence following detonation of a dirty bomb, the Western powers will be slow to discover who is responsible and will be reluctant to strike Tehran. Efforts will be undertaken to obtain evidence identifying the terrorists involved, the groups with which they are affiliated, and the trail of money and arms that leads back to the sponsor of the terror, Iran. That will take time while in the interim the terrorist attacks may continue. Barack Obama and John Kerry joined by a majority of Democrats in the House and Senate are responsible for laying the foundation for this horrific scenario. They have abandoned our staunchest ally in the Middle East, Israel, and have hastened the arrival of a new age of Middle Eastern conflict, the age of nuclear terror. As dirty bombs are exploded in different Western locales, entire parts of cities will become uninhabitable for dozens, if not hundreds, of years. Although some surmise that Iran will not be in a position to supply radioactive materials to its terrorist allies within the next ten years, those estimates are grossly naïve. In all probability within the next few years, Iran will possess the ability to supply its terrorist allies with radioactive materials sufficient to create dirty bombs. It is certainly no secret that Iran is a dedicated enemy of the United States and Israel. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, a theocratic dictator, favors destruction of Israel and the United States and with some regularity calls for “death to America” and “death to Israel.” Indeed, so prolific is the anti-American and anti-Israeli rhetoric from this regime that it is fair to say that the Islamic Republic of Iran has made it a major goal of its military, bureaucracy, and radicalized population to bring about the destruction of the United States and Israel at the earliest possible moment when that goal can be effectuated. The hatred that drove Iranian revolutionary guards to overrun the U.S. embassy in Tehran, and hold hostage and torture American diplomats and citizens for 444 days, is as virulent and pronounced today as it was in 1979. Rather than presume to negotiate with Iran, we should be joining Israel in obliterating that country. While we spent American lives and resources in overthrowing Sadam Hussein and unwisely endeavoring to establish a secular Western style democracy in that country which has never known democracy, we would more wisely have attacked and destroyed a true enemy of the United States, the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Obama Administration down plays the significance of the rhetoric of condemnation spewed by the Iranian regime, professing that Khamenei is merely playing to his audience. Indeed, like Neville Chamberlain who pronounced “peace in our time” upon concluding a pact with Hitler that he never intended to honor, Obama proclaims the deal with Iran to be an assurance of peace, as Iran now works to obtain the bomb. Of course, history proves that the radical Islamists running Iran have no problem making good on their threats against the West and lying if falsehood advances their aims. For example, while Iran denies any involvement in terrorist attacks on Americans overseas, Iranian Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani, honored as a hero in Iran, has been linked by the U.S. military to approximately 500 American deaths, most of them in Iraq. Moreover, although Iran has repeatedly denied supplying weapons and funding to Hezbollah and Hamas, Iranian arms stashes and money wires have been uncovered, establishing the connection beyond a doubt. Because Obama has chosen appeasement over defense of American interests, the security of the West may only now be served by an emboldened Israel. With shipments of S-300 anti-aircraft missiles coming now from Russia to protect Tehran from an Israeli attack, Israel is under pressure to act in the short term. Israel cannot afford to await the day when Hezbollah, Hamas, or other regional terrorists succeed in detonating a dirty bomb within its borders. Israel cannot afford to await the day when Iran is loading a nuclear warhead atop a ballistic missile destined for Tel Aviv. For its own survival, indeed for the security of the civilized world, Israel should attack Iran and eliminate its nuclear weapon making potential at the earliest possible moment. One can readily see the makings of a nuclear conflict if Israel does not act pre-emptively. If a terrorist group detonates a dirty bomb in Israel, Israel will be compelled to retaliate, using the event to justify not only extermination of the terrorist group but also its state sponsor, Iran. The Ayatollah of Iran, who regularly whips his people into a frenzy to destroy Israel, will likely make good on that promise, accepting the risk of nuclear suicide for his nation. Israel, in turn, can be counted upon to unleash its nuclear arsenal against Iran if radioactive weapons are detonated in Israel. If Iran faces imminent nuclear annihilation, it will no doubt expand the conflict regionally, acting against those Arab states which it has condemned for religious heresy and fraternization with the United States (who Khameini and his predecessor refer to as “the Great Satan”), including the regime governing Saudi Arabia. Indeed, we should not forget that just four years ago, Soleimani endeavored to have two of his Iranian operatives assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States, bomb the Saudi embassy, and bomb the Israeli embassy, but the plot was foiled before it could be effectuated and the Iranian operatives arrested, prosecuted, and incarcerated. In short, because dirty bombs are now reasonably foreseeable weapons of terror, the pressure is on for Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and other neighboring Arab states to acquire a nuclear capability of their own, lest they be blackmailed by Iran into accepting regime change, tolerating destabilizing elements within their own countries, or adopting policies more hospitable to Iran and its regional ambitions.
Prudence dictates action by Israel now, which action is unlikely to be met by countries other than Iran with any opposition beyond lip service. There is no middle ground that can give Israel the assurance it must have that its most ardent enemy will not use its new nuclear capability to bring about the destruction of Israel. By abandoning Israel, the United States has paved the way for Iran to proceed with its terrorist ambitions unhindered and has forced Israel’s hand. Israel must therefore act alone and do so promptly. It should pre-emptively strike Tehran and eliminate the Iranian leadership along with that regime’s nuclear capability. If it does so, it will achieve greater security not only itself but also for the region, Europe, and the United States—whether the West recognizes that fact or, more likely, not.
