TERRORISM ANTIDOTE: A WELL REGULATED MILITIA AND UNCONVENTIONAL WAR

Imagine if at each venue in Paris where terrorists struck with AK-47s and explosives, Parisians were armed. Had Parisians been armed, it is likely that far fewer would have lost their lives. Dozens would have trained their weapons on the terrorist attackers and cut them down in short order. The wisdom of the Founding Fathers in giving the new American nation the Second Amendment is underscored by precisely what happened in Paris.

“A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The Founding Fathers knew that only if the citizenry were equipped with the means to defend themselves militarily could a free nation survive the assaults that came (then as they do now) from enemies domestic and foreign. Indeed, individual liberty and sovereignty depend greatly on the diffusion of power made possible only when a free people have the physical means to defend their freedom. A monopoly on force, whether in the hands of government or terrorists, creates an inevitable threat to life, liberty, and property. Force in private hands that can compete with that coming from tyrants is the only true security for a free people.

The war against terror will only succeed if fought unconventionally, through a well- armed and trained citizenry and an expansion of reliance on professional Special Operations Forces. The latter need to be at constant work killing ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and related terrorist groups, along with their adherents, financial supporters, and those who give them aid (meaning bringing death not only to those engaged in active hostility but also to those who are financing, housing, feeding, clothing, and giving aid and comfort to terrorists wherever they are outside of the United States).

Special Operations Forces master the art of unconventional warfare. They appear when least expected. They employ overwhelming force in a rapid take down of the enemy, and they disappear leaving devastation in their wake. They are the ultimate force to annihilate the sources of support, supply, instruction, and inspiration for those dedicated to our destruction.

To maximize their effectiveness, our Special Forces have to be freed from the overly restrictive rules of engagement that now inhibit their operations. We must expand the concept of the enemy to include anyone outside of the United States who engages in terror or who assists terrorists in any meaningful way. There will be loss of innocent life overseas but that is a price we must pay to eradicate terrorism; to win, we must maximize options in the field and ensure that not only those wielding arms but all those who provide aid, comfort, financing, food, lodging, and assistance are within the cross-hairs of our Special Forces.

Moreover, we need to record our annihilation of terrorists and their supporters and advertise our successes throughout the Middle East, using social media as a retort to terrorists’ uses. Ours must be a clear, redundant message that there is no safe haven for those who attack us; those who do must face an assured prompt and brutal demise. Our propaganda campaign needs to make clear that every terrorist and every supporter, no matter how remote in the chain, is a person slated for elimination, and then we have to make good on that promise by relentless pursuit and all force necessary. We must make terrorism become a futile endeavor, resulting in little loss of American and allied life but maximum loss of the lives of those who commit and aid in the commission of terror. No longer should terrorists be permitted to dominate the social media with their message of terror; rather, the message needs to be diluted in a sea of visual proof that terrorists and their supporters are being taken down day after day. The military and ideological campaign against terror must be relentless, must never sleep, until every last vestige of terror is obliterated.

Our unconventional means must include an armed and prepared citizenry. A true commander-in-chief would rally Americans to become armed and well-trained in self-defense and to use force when confronted with terror. Retired military and police need to be given special status in our society and invited to assume roles of defense within their communities and on board commercial transportation. They should be present and at the ready in all places where crowds gather, and they should help train the citizenry in the means and appropriate uses of weapons for self-defense. Conceal carry needs to become the new popular past-time with Americans on the ready to take out those who commit acts of terror. In short, terrorists needs to understand that they are at high risk of failure here in America because none of us is willing to be a hapless victim, and each of us is armed and prepared to fight for the liberty and security of our friends, families, and nation.

We need a President with the vision and courage to implement these changes, who will tell Americans the truth about the extent and gravity of the threat, who will lead Americans to arm themselves and become trained and at the ready (a new militia ready to fight terror), and who will vastly increase the numbers of, and the mission of, special operations forces to strike with ever greater frequency, ferocity, and effect against every place internationally where terrorists or their supporters operate and gather. We need a President who will seek congressional approval of a war resolution, having the stated objective of completely eliminating every person and every means that supports and sustains acts of terror against the United States and its allies. Obama has no vision, courage, or will and, so, will greatly encumber America’s war on terror until his successor arrives.

Obama’s quest to provide over 10,000 Syrian refugees American residence offends common sense, as we witness the refugee traffic from Syria to include terrorists masquerading as victims of conflict. We must not open our borders to Syrian refugees. The notion that we can adequately vet each one to ensure that none is involved with terrorism is illusory. We have no means of knowing the background, associations, and ideology of any Syrian, and we have seen acts of terror committed by men, women, and even children around the world. The commander-in-chief’s first order of business is to protect the American people. Given the fact that terrorists can and have used refugee status as a means to enter the West, and the fact that we have no means to assure that those entering this country from Syria are not terrorists and are not connected to terrorists, we should recognize that the risks are unacceptable and the time is not right for allowing refugees from the region into our nation.

Finally, there needs to be a frank recognition by our leaders that we are indeed at war with a brand of religious extremism that defines murder of innocents as a holy endeavor. We are at war with radical Islam (the words this President refuses to utter). It is religiously inspired hate that opposes every person who dissents from its faith and its demands. It is an all controlling theocratic dictatorship that seeks to annihilate freedom and establish totalitarian tyranny in the form of a global caliphate.

A resolution of war against all known terrorist organizations operating internationally against the United States needs to be introduced in the House and Senate, and our representatives need to declare that we are at war. The nation needs to mobilize for war and resources need to be shifted from welfare to warfare. Our men in arms and our citizens need to understand that this radical Islam is utterly intolerant and contemptuous of human life, viewing all things that differ from its beliefs and its leaders’ dictates as inherently evil and deserving of destruction. Although our First Amendment protects all in their choice of what to believe and what to profess, it does not protect those who wish to translate their beliefs and words into acts of terror and conspiracies to commit terror. We need to know our enemies, what they believe, what motivates them, and why they must be destroyed if we are to galvanize popular understanding and will to fight and protect the rights of the innocent. We need to recognize that the enemy is already in our midst, and we need to act immediately against that enemy abroad, if we are to win the war on terror.
