PRESIDENT BUSH'S BULLY PULPIT SILENT ON ANTI-TERRORISM MEASURE
By Dr. Patrick Jonston September 26, 2006 NewsWithViews.com The week following the 5th anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, Bush has pounded his bully pulpit in support of two anti-terrorism measures he claims will help protect America from terrorist attacks. These two pieces of legislation will make us safer and more secure, the President argued. It is nice to hear a President speaking with such moral authority on behalf of legislation that will make Americans safer, and I do hope these pieces of legislation will make us safer without sacrificing liberties. However, I have little hope that they will. Why? Because of his lack of support for legislation that will make us a thousand-fold more safe and more free than the proposals for which he has lobbied this week. The number of people that perished in the terrorist attacks of 9-11 have been slaughtered every day in Americas abortion clinics, and the Presidents bully pulpit has been silent. The Right to Life Act (HR 552) has over 80 sponsors and co-sponsors, and should be strongly supported by this President if he cared about protecting American lives, but he has been silent. When there has been legislation that would save lives and would be more likely to succeed with his support, too often he has either been silent or has opposed it. When South Dakota passed legislation banning abortion last year, he opposed it. He has spoken in favor of the abortifacient Plan B going over the counter. He increased tax-payer funding of Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the world. Now he is silent on the Right to Life Act indeed, on any and all legislation that will actually save somebodys life. This is no grand shift of political thought for Mr. Bush, nor is it unintentional hypocrisy on his part. By his repeated support of pro-abortion candidates over pro-life candidates, by his limited use of the bully-pulpit, and through his court appointees, he has proven that he has never given a flip about the unborn, all of his culture of life rhetoric notwithstanding.(1) George W. Bush should be a great embarrassment to the conservative, pro-life stalwarts who urged their followers to support George W. Bush for President. The American Center for Law and Justice, Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council, the Christian Defense Coalition, the Eagle Forum, the American Family Association, National Right to Life, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell the list could go on of the conservatives who hailed George W. Bush as the savior of the unborn child and epitome of pro-life success in the halls of D.C.(2) Conservative groups not only endorsed Bush for President, they also endorsed his Supreme Court appointee Sam Alito, who as a lesser judge ruled New Hampshires Partial Birth Abortion Ban unconstitutional and cited Roe v. Wade approvingly in the process. Havent conservative groups been calling Partial Birth Abortion infanticide? Having they been saying that only the most extreme pro-aborts would support such a barbaric form of child-killing? And yet their darling pro-life President nominates a candidate to the Supreme Court who ruled a Partial Birth Abortion Ban unconstitutional and who cited Roe v. Wade approvingly in the process, and they rally their troops to support this nomination? With pro-lifers like these, who needs pro-choicers? The past eight years, conservative groups have lost all moral authority to speak on political issues. Even the Constitutional Party, which historically has been the only political party to stand up for constitutional limitations and to push for the re-criminalization of abortion, has been compromising its principles. This past year at their convention in Tampa, they voted in favor of state chapters with leadership and candidates that endorse abortion. Even Howard Phillips, who has been my political hero since his Presidential campaigns in 1996 and 2000, cast his lot to keep pro-abortion leaders in the Constitution Party.(3) There is a great vacuum of moral authority in political sphere today. The princes and prophets have gone astray, truth has fallen in the streets, the children of God are being terrorized daily in Americas abortion clinics and the best care more about power and prestige. Im not being pessimestic, but honestly optimistic. We have a brief span of time during which to redeem our nation, but we must first acknowledge how close we are to the brink of judgement. I sought for a man among them, says the Lord, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord God. --(Ezekiel 22:30-31) God is looking for someone to fill this moral vacuum with truth and justice. If he cannot find one, He will bring His own justice. Then, Mr. Bush, you will discover that all of the anti-terrorism legislation you can possibly sign will not protect you when God Almighty is the one terrorizing you. Footnotes: 1.
