A SUBTLE INHUMANITY

This will be my second Christmas spent with my adoptive parents and ... well ... I'm the luckiest man I know. I won't go on again about the pathetic soap opera of my natural parents. I'm now with my beloved "Mamma and Poppy Joe" in Italy. For all that "luck," I thank God ... and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Ending this particular election year away from North America is a blessed relief. Things political in America didn't particularly go my way … and I don't think I need be at all particular about that.

However, thank God again that Sarah Palin showed up. Without her I would have given up all hope for America. As it is, my hopes are still rather slim but miracles have been known to happen and if the United States ever needed one, it is now.

My recent three part series entitled Progressive Moral Ambiguity might show you how much I needed a vacation from our dreary, presidential bends in the road.

Oh, I know it is an ecstatic victory for the United States to at last have a black president -- but then why not Thomas Sowell? Any further down this Progressive Highway and the last vestiges of America will have been rendered irretrievable.

I mark one beginning of the Progressive trend with the Roe v. Wade decision, of course. That any American, let alone a major political party, should consider legalized abortion "progress"—there's the Progressive Movement in a nutshell—or on a nut farm!

How did we get here?

Our editor at Enter Stage Right, Steve Martinovich, summed up what I'm talking about as "subtle inhumanity."

Yes, an inhumanity so subtly defended that even devout Catholics are persuaded the Democratic Party's promise of change is sincere.

More of the same is what I see in store for us—and that includes the Bush Republican Party's considerable contribution to this very left-wing idea of Progress!

Oh, well I live in Canada -- have now for over fourteen years and gazing on my profoundly troubled, former homeland, either down from the North or across the Atlantic from Europe—it's heartbreaking.

The African-American community, or at least a large part of it, does not realize that legalized abortion, like legalized slavery, is an inhumanity -- one which all the silver-tongued graduates of Harvard and Yale, the Obamas, the Clintons and the Bushes will never be able to sugar-coat—no matter how subtle the content of their obfuscations.

Oh, I know that the Bushes, both of them, have publicly condemned Roe v. Wade but have either of them done a single, substantive thing to raise the American consciousness about abortion's increasing corruption of the American soul?

As I write this, the gentle voice of Pope Benedict XVI is rising out of the television set to celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. He presides at the Piazza di Spagna and my parents sit in rapt attention, hanging on every word certain that, indeed, his presence in the world is at least one piece of evidence that the human race has not completely lost its mind nor, more importantly, its immortal soul.

Gentleness—yes, and a delicacy that might resemble frailty—but a level of sensitivity that reflects this Pope's vision of our Father Almighty's profound strength and His eternal awareness of everything we do.

I'm certainly not hoping to Catholicize you. I myself am a lapsed Catholic and with no presumptions about my own rank in the eyes of the world let alone those of the Almighty—but, God help me, how can anyone even remotely Christian, ponder for any length of time "doing unto gestating infants what they would not want to have been done unto their own gestating infancy"?!

In addition, America has always believed that "all men are created equal"—not gestated as possible candidates for abortion.

I'm very blessed and not particularly sure why this should be so. I've committed more than my share of sins, but in the name of all that is even remotely decent, inhumanity, whether its appearance is subtle or otherwise, is certainly one of the most implacable roads to suicide for all of us; and abortion is not a postponement. It is surrogate suicide.
