AN OPEN LETTER TO PASTORS

Where was Christ's church in the 1960's when prayer and Bible reading were outlawed from schools around the country? It was Martin Luther who said, " I am much afraid that schools will prove to be great gates of Hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where The Scriptures do not reign paramount. Every institution in which men are not increasingly occupied with the Word of God must become corrupt." Could anyone today possibly describe our government-run schools any better than Luther did several hundred years ago?

Where was Christ's church in the 1970's when abortion was legalized? The unborn child is legally considered a non-human. Forty-two million children have been killed since then and the slaughter continues unabated.

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb." Psalm 139:13

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you "were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5

In these passages about David and Jeremiah respectively, we can see that God has a purpose for every being and knows each life intimately even before they are born. We have a lot to answer for.

The slippery slope continues as euthanasia is gaining momentum. How far are we away from Holland's policy where the state makes the ultimate decision as to whether your life holds any value to society? The elderly are afraid to go to the hospital there because no longer is there any respect for human life; they are afraid that instead of being healed, they will be murdered.

Francis Schaeffer put it best when he said, "The question of the dignity of human life is not something on the periphery of Judeo-Christian thinking, but almost in the center of it." (God himself being the center) The evangelical establishment should be blowing the trumpet loud and clear on abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia.

Where is Christ's church today? There was a recent Supreme Court decision that said there is a constitutional right to sodomy. Back in the 1970's the American Psychiatric Association took homosexuality off the books as an abnormality. It was only a matter of time for it to become "normal". Recently this organization removed pedophilia as an abnormality. How long until we have a court decision that makes pedophilia a constitutional right? In Nashville, Tennessee parents are suing a middle school over locker room cameras. Little children aged 10 to 14 were being videotaped in different stages of undress and the images were accessed 98 times during a 6 month period sometimes late at night. We can see the natural progression of evil when it is not stopped early on.

"But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." Matthew 18:6

I agree with Francis Schaeffer when he mentions in his book, "A Christian Manifesto", that there is no neutral ground in this war. To not take sides is in itself taking a side and it is the side of God's enemies. He also stated that "If there is no final place for civil disobedience, then the government has been made autonomous, and as such, has been put in the place of the living God." In Schaeffer's book, "How Should We Then Live?", he mentioned that the church picked up on at least one impoverished value of the 1960's - personal peace, and if we don't speak out against the greatest evil of our time, authoritarian government whether it comes from the right or the left, our children and grandchildren will be the future enemies of the state.

There is a spiritual war going on and Christ's church is not even involved. We hear from pastors all the time that they don't "get political". What does that mean? The Bible does not differentiate between secular and spiritual things. True spirituality covers ALL of life including government and law.

Christ's church has a history in this country of being the very hub of society and held the greatest influence over that society. Pastors, more often than not, had the largest libraries in town and were the most learned of men. It wasn't just a place for sermons, Sunday school and socials, but for all types of educational programs and for town hall meetings. What happened to change this?

Only recently have I come to a more complete understanding of the problem between church and state. When churches decided to become incorporated, they voluntarily gave up their First Amendment rights. Instead of a Church headed by Christ that could not be regulated by the State, they became a corporation, owned and controlled by The State. This has to be the biggest con job of the century by those who wished to silence the church. Many Christian lawyers have unknowingly led churches down this spurious path because with their training from secular law schools, they weren't given the proper knowledge either. Isn't it time to be about our Father's business? Let's free Christ's church and put Him back in charge.
