In Four Basic Parts:
• Safety & Effectiveness
• Conflicts of Interested
The quality of the discussion (or lack thereof) about the 141 measles cases in a country of 318 million has red-lined into the absurd. Last year in the US there were 604 cases of measles. It can be deadly, but in most cases it's not. Depending on whose data you believe, there have been between zero and 4 deaths directly caused by measles in the US in the last10 years. In the same timespan, according to data compiled by the the US Department of Health and Human Services', VAERS (vaccine adverse event reporting system) there have been about 100 deaths caused by the measles vaccine. Please remember, public health records are clear: measles and pertusis in this country were reduced by 97% before the vaccines were even introduced. There are other ways to help keep our children healthy.
In my home state, the Oregon State Senate is deliberating now over SB44. This bill would eliminate vaccine exemptions on philosophical or religious grounds. Parents would lose the right to choose what medical care their perfectly healthy children will receive if they want them to attend public school. Medical exemptions (as decided by a doctor) are the only way to opt-out. SB442 was sponsored by a doctor, Senator Elizabeth Steiner Hayward, a Portland Democrat and family physician. Several other states are moving quickly to follow suit.
The official mainstream position is that vaccines are safe, beneficial and don't cause harm – period - end of story. I've heard TV doctors and “experts” say: “the science is clear, don't ask any questions, just roll up your sleeves.” 2016 Democratic presidential frontrunner, Hillary Clinton said: “The science is clear, the earth is round, the sky is blue, vaccines work, the science is settled.” Anyone who is skeptical or has questions is often considered “anti-science” (kind of like when Galileo was imprisoned for daring to challenge the “science” that the Sun revolved around the Earth).
I've studied this issue carefully for 35 years and believe that vaccine science is far from settled. What we need is rational discussion and vaccine research independent of drug company influence. Keep in mind, family doctors don't do their own primary research. Virtually any “science” they offer in this area has been financed/influenced by a pharmaceutical company that stands to profit.
Even if some vaccines are beneficial, is it possible to get too much of a good thing? In the late 60s and early 70s children typically received 7 total vaccine doses, as prevention for 7 diseases, in a total of 3 shots. Current American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations now state that children should receive 35 vaccine doses by the age of 15 months, 49 doses by the age of six, and 69 doses by the age of 18. Included in those recommendations, is that parents begin vaccinating their children the day they’re born for Hepatitis B, a disease that is transmitted sexually or through shared needle use.
Public health officials have never even attempted to prove that it's safe to inject infants, children, and teenagers with this number and volume of vaccines. Further, they can't explain why, concurrent with an increasing number of vaccinations, there's been an explosion of neurological and immune system disorders in American children.
In children, soaring autism rates, serious ADHD issues, life-threatening acute allergies, and asthma are all becoming part of the “new normal” childhood. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, since 1980 asthma death rates for US children under 19 years old has increased by nearly 80%. Are thoughtful parents allowed to ask any questions about any of this?
Anaphylactic shock produced by peanut exposure has caused many schools across the country to ban peanut butter sandwiches (the public school my grandson attends features peanut-free zones). Inhalers in kids’ backpacks and lunch boxes are now commonplace. All 50 states have laws allowing students to carry and self-administer these medications during their school day. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and The American Lung Association acknowledge all this but have no reasonable explanations. Interesting that back in 1994, the Journal of the American Medical Association published data showing that children diagnosed with asthma were five times more likely than not to have received the pertussis vaccine.
There are dozens of examples of health sciences completely reversing, what were thought to be, scientifically supported theories, sometimes in just a few years. Here's one example. In 1976, Dr. Jonas Salk, creator of the killed-virus polio vaccine used in the 1950s, testified that the live-virus vaccine created by Albert Sabin (used almost exclusively in the U.S. from the early 1960s to 2000) was the “principal if not sole cause” of all reported polio cases in the U.S. after 1961. In 1992, the CDC published an admission that the live-virus vaccine had become the dominant cause of polio in the United States. It was removed from the US market in 2000, but is still used in many third-world countries. How do we know that vaccines currently in use will stand the test of time for safety?
People who would force vaccines on others refuse to accept logic, science and questions. If a vaccine works well, how could vaccinated children be put at risk by the unvaccinated? Some think if 95% of kids are vaccinated, everyone is protected by herd immunity. Reality: the largest part of the “herd” are adults (they outnumber kids 77 to 23%). Studies show 50-70% of adults are behind (a decade or more) on most vaccines and boosters. Teachers, administrators, and school employees are excluded from the SB442. They keep their freedoms. Forcing the concept of herd immunity on 23% of the population with the hope that it will somehow create mass immunity, is a fairy tale with zero scientific basis.
It's alarming and very sad that many doctors call their patients selfish for thinking and asking questions about these issues.
Is the Science Clear? Are Vaccines Effective & Safe? Why I'm skeptical
When experts say “vaccine science is clear”, I have to ask who performed the science? The government and drug companies have been caught and/or convicted time and again of suppressing or altering data in many areas, including public health. If they want me to be less skeptical, they need to be more trustworthy.
Tens of thousands of parents of autistic children believe they witnessed their child's cognitive function significantly deteriorate within minutes, hours or days of receiving a vaccine. And if we believe them, we have to ask: was it a complete coincidence their child experienced a significant downturn immediately following the vaccine or did the vaccine cause the problem?
The official CDC position is that vaccines do not cause or contribute to autism. This organization has left no room for the possibility what those parents witnessed has any validity. They dismiss those accounts as being unconfirmed anecdotes. Yet many doctors willingly offer anecdotes of unvaccinated sick children as some kind of proof that vaccines are necessary.
But my skepticism goes deeper. In 2010 two former Merck (a major vaccine manufacturer) virologists filed a Federal False Claims Act complaint when the Act first became law. The complaint reports that the that Merck allegedly "knowingly falsified its mumps vaccine effectiveness test data, spiked blood samples with animal antibodies, and sold a vaccine that actually promoted mumps and measles outbreaks." Merck’s attorneys were unsuccessful in their attempts to block the case from going to trial. A Federal District Judge recently ruled the whistle blowers and direct purchasers produced enough evidence to establish that false statements could have helped give Merck a monopoly.
A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine supports the strong possibility that the Merck whistle blowers were being truthful. It revealed that an astounding 97 percent of children affected by a mumps outbreak that swept the Northeast back in 2009 had already been fully vaccinated for the condition in accordance with recommended government guidelines. Many of us are not comfortable injecting Merck creations into very young children.
The DPT triple vaccine (diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus) is supposed to convey immunity to pertussis (whooping cough). In 2010, the largest outbreak of whooping cough in over 50 years reportedly occurred in California. What appears to have been a scare campaign was then launched in the state by Big Pharma funded medical trade associations and public health officials, falsely accusing people who had opted-out of the pertussis vaccine as being the cause of that whooping cough outbreak. But research released in 2012 painted a very different picture than what had been spread by the media in 2010.
In a study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, researchers reviewed data on every patient under 18 years old who tested positive for pertussis between March and October 2010 at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Rafael, California. Out of these 132 patients:
• 81 percent were fully up to date on the whooping cough vaccine
• 8 percent had never been vaccinated
• 11 percent had received at least one shot, but not the entire recommended series
That could be viewed as a 81% failure rate, yet most people still have blind faith in vaccine effectiveness. No matter where you stand on vaccines, thinking and questioning of the above statements is appropriate.
Conflicts of Interest Make Me Skeptical
This is an important issue. The science needs to be squeaky clean. Scientists and influential doctors who are formulating national vaccine policy need to be free of bias. But isn't the CDC unbiased? Maybe. Following are just a few of many situations that thinking people could find questionable:
Dr. Paul Offit of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is one the most vocal vaccine proponents in the US. He was a long-time member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The ACIP is a 15-member panel selected by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that provides guidelines to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on vaccines. Offit recently received $29 million as part of a $182-million sale by that hospital of its worldwide royalty interest on a Merck vaccine. Offit is a listed inventor on a cluster of patents that financially protect Merck.
Dr. Julie Gerberding, former director of the CDC resigned her post in 2009 and was almost immediately named president of Merck & Co Inc's vaccine division. Company officials refused to disclose her compensation.
In 2009, $950 million was levied against Merck to pay for fines and civil settlements involving false advertising claims and fraudulent drug trial results.
In 2009, Pfizer paid $2.3 billion to settle criminal and civil allegations over illegal marketing of drugs. In 2012 GlaxoSmithKline plead guilty and paid $3 billion to settle fraud and failure to report drug side-effect allegations.
While those settlements were not specifically related to vaccine products they demonstrate a consistent pattern of deceit in business practices. Why would an intelligent person think that these companies or their pharmaceutical industry brothers are any more ethical with their profit-making vaccine products?
Is Anyone Getting Injured By Vaccines?
There is a lot more to think about and question than you've likely heard from your family physician.
In 1986 Congress removed legal liability from drug companies for damage done by vaccines. However, because the possibility of severe harm or death resulting from vaccines was so obvious, in 1988 Congress set up an alternate system for vaccine victims to receive compensation – the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, commonly known as The Vaccine Court. A small tax is collected from every vaccine sale and put into a fund to pay vaccine victims. If you are injured or killed by a vaccine, an attorney must be hired to fight government attorneys to seek damages, as you cannot sue the drug manufacturers directly.
In the last four years damage awards have averaged over $225,000,000 annually and halfway thru 2014 awards were on a record pace that will probably end up doubling that. Since it is so difficult to fight the government in court and win, there is an excellent chance these figures only represent a tiny fraction of the actual number of people harmed or killed by vaccines.
Another indication the problem may be far larger is that “90 to 99% of all adverse reactions are never reported,” according to David Kessler, former head of the FDA “With regards to any reports that are made directly to the pharmaceutical companies, there is absolutely no accountability mechanism to ensure that that data is ever forwarded to the FDA - the process is run entirely by the “honor system.”
While many have tried to explain away the following news story that broke in 2014, it makes me think and question. William Thompson issued the following statement, “I am Senior Scientist with the CDC, where I have worked since 1998. I regret that my coauthors and I omitted statistically significant information in our 2004 article published in the journal Pediatrics. The omitted data suggested that African American males who received the MMR vaccine before age 36 months were at increased risk for autism.”
It's unlikely that allegedly safe vaccines could survive in a free market based on their own merit, if consumers had swift and direct recourse when damaged. Regardless, many of us are just not comfortable injecting Merck laboratory creations into our very young children.
Vaccines are big business. Vaccine sales have increased about 500% in the last decade and, while still only a small percentage of total drug sales, account for over $40 billion in the US annually. I can think of no other for-profit business that is absolved of all legal liability for the safety or effectiveness of their products.
Marcia Angell, MD, former editor in chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, one of the world’s most well respected medical journals said the pharmaceutical industry “has moved very far from it’s original high purpose of discovering and producing useful new drugs. Now primarily a marketing machine to sell drugs of dubious benefit, this industry uses its wealth and power to co-opt every institution that might stand in its way, including the US congress, Food and Drug Administration, academic medical centers, and the medical profession itself.”
I've seen articles published by doctors that purport to demonstrate the benefits of vaccines by recounting stories of severely malnourished children in Africa benefiting from the measles vaccine. I'm not sure what that has to do with children in the US. IF (and that's a big if) a malnourished Chinese kid needs GMO rice to keep his eyesight, does that mean that eating copious quantities of GMO foods is beneficial for everyone? On both these subjects, logical thought is needed, not extreme worst-case hysteria.
If you feel you should vaccinate, the Weston A. Price Foundation recommends you take the following precautions:
• Wait until the child is at least 2 years old
• Do not give more than one vaccination at a time.
• Never vaccinate when the child is sick
• Be sure that the vaccines are thimerosal-free
• Supplement the child with extra cod liver oil, vitamin C, and B12 before each shot
• Obtain a medical exemption if the child has had a bad reaction to a vaccination before or if there is a personal or family history of vaccine reactions, convulsions or neurological disorders, severe allergies and/or immune system disorders
I would also suggest supplementing with the amino acid glutathione several days before and after vaccines are administered. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that can help the liver clear toxins.
The vaccine debate is a rational discussion a nation like the US needs to have. We pride ourselves on respecting individuality and independent thinking. What we need is science that is independent of drug company influence so that thinking people have less legitimate reasons to be very skeptical.
For a detailed look of many aspects of natural health care, including vaccines, I recommend you read my book: Wellness Uprising: Your Health In Your Hands.
Read what Dr. Janet Levatin says: “Wellness Uprising is a compelling book for our times. With increasing numbers of people suffering from chronic illnesses that are largely preventable, those seeking a healthier path need a guide that is both informative and practical to help them achieve and maintain the vibrant health that should be everyone’s birthright. Wellness Uprising is such a book.”
For an in depth look at vaccines that goes way beyond what your local pediatrician is likely to offer, I highly recommend the DVD: Vaccines: The Risks, The Benefits, The Choices, by Dr Sherri Tenpenny. With incisive reasoning and over 6000 hours meticulous research, Dr. Tenpenny substantiates her work with citations directly from CDC documents and respected peer-reviewed journals, offers documented proof that vaccines do compromise the immune system, and shares compelling information regarding the "real" risks in choosing not to vaccinate.
