THE POLITICS OF COVETOUSNESS

It is widely known that Americans are spending themselves into debt slavery. For example, Bloomberg business reported last September that consumer debt was at an all time high of $3.2 trillion with credit cards and auto loans leading the pack. “Spending on repairs and net used cars has barely budged… But the fact that spending seems to be coming at the expense of more debt suggests Americans are putting themselves in a riskier financial position… an increasing share of that debt finances consumption that only declines in value. Consumption per capita has been rising since the recession, despite stagnant income.”[1] In other words people are spending more money than they are making and putting the difference on credit cards and new car loans.

Video of the Sermon:

What is going on here can be explained with one simple word - covetousness. Webster's 1828 defines it as “A strong or inordinate desire of obtaining and possessing some supposed good; usually in a bad sense, and applied to an inordinate desire of wealth or avarice.” When people borrow money to buy items they clearly cannot afford the power of covetousness is in full swing. The end result will be debt slavery.

What is less often seen is that it is not just individuals and families who’ve given themselves over to covetousness, but human civil government. America is even worse in terms of actions, which are clearly covetous, and activities, which are patently designed to stir up continual covetousness among the electorate. I call this the Politics of Covetousness.

It is playing the American people by cultivating covetousness into a future of eternal debt slavery. At current levels with more than 100 Trillion dollars owed, America's debt could not be paid even if the wealth of every American was entirely confiscated. And thanks to the wicked Federal Reserve it is designed so that we can never repay. We will become debt slaves forever.

Covetousness is a clear violation of God’s Law. Turn to Exodus 20 as we come to the Tenth Commandment. Exodus 20:17 “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.”

Jesus warns of the dangers of covetousness. In Luke 12:15 “Take heed and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth." So Jesus shows us that the adage is false, “he who dies with the most toys wins.”

Covetousness has been called "the mother of sin" because the desire to sin first arises in the heart before it finds expression in the act. Some might think that covetousness doesn’t appear as bad as some other more outward sins, but the fact is, it is one of the worst sins because it spawns so many others.

When we cultivate an unlawful desire for that which is not rightfully ours, we start down the road to physically acting upon that desire. We covet when we set our hearts upon something, something that belongs to another and the more we wish we had it instead of them the closer we are to taking action on that sinful desire. Where does adultery begin? With a wrong desire, a covetous desire in the heart. Where does theft begin? With a wrong desire, a covetous desire in the heart. And so it goes. If left unchecked. The desire becomes all consuming, covetousness. It is an unlawful desire for what is not rightly ours

The enemy of our souls works diligently to cultivate a heart of covetousness and Satan has many partners here on earth doing his bidding in this regard. I contend that both political parties in America work hard to cultivate covetousness in the hearts of voters. Both parties play the covetousness card to obtain votes.

That is easier to see with one party. Which Party attacks, and resents the "rich"? Which Party resents oil, coal, nuclear, natural gas? Which Party resents business? Which Party obviously resents the Constitution and the rule of law? It is clear they are about cultivating covetousness in the hearts of voters. Their message is you will have so much more stuff if you vote for us. We will take the wealth from others and give it to you.

Barry promised to redistribute wealth. Now who does that appeal to? It appeals to those who are covetous for the wealth of others. You probably saw the free cell phone lady, bragging she had a purse full of free phones Barry had given her. She was a willing participant in Barry’s theft from American taxpayers because her heart was filled with covetousness. The Scriptures are very clear, simply because someone is poor doesn’t excuse wealth redistribution.
