In the Rocky Mountain News, Denver, Colorado, May 16, 2005, the headlines showed a high school student with cap and gown sitting in a seat at the head of the class with dozens of empty seats behind him. The caption read, �What Happened?� Emblazoned above the picture--one of the most horrific statistics faces many communities across the Union: �In 1999, 5,663 students started the eighth grade in Denver. In May of 2005, 1,884 graduated from Denver public schools.�

That means 70 percent dropped out or flunked out. Seven out of ten kids did not complete their education. It means they dumped themselves onto American society functionally illiterate. A look at the underlying dilemma reveals one in five teachers in Denver schools transfers or quits during the school year. Why? Denver suffers over 25,000 illegal alien children who cannot and will not speak English. They arrived with parents who traveled illegally from other countries and crossed into the USA without legal status.

Those children become problematic because 40 languages are spoken among those 25,000 illegal alien children in the Denver school system. No, it�s not their fault, but it is a menacing problem for this country. Their parents are functionally illiterate in English, thus, cannot help their own children. Additionally, no amount of ESL classes can solve the problem with over 50 languages because no teacher can conduct classes in English with any hope of success.

Thus, drugs, extortion, violence and even killings occurred in the 2004/05 school year. One 16 year old stabbed to death a 17 year old at Montbello High School. The principal resigned out of utter frustration. Superintendent Wartgow resigned this year from Denver Public Schools. One can only imagine his sense of utter futility at the nightmare growing in Denver schools. If he was an administrator in Los Angeles, it would be a living employment death daily. That city features nearly three million illegal aliens. An angry confrontation by parents occurred over a Mexican flag being presented equally in the classroom in a Denver school. It was even more maddening because �Old Glory� was hung incorrectly next to the Mexican flag by a teacher more interested in serving Mexican kids than American kids.

American parents must ask what kind of an education their kids receive from parents� hard earned tax dollars. Short answer: severely degraded. No teacher can administer the educational curriculum with the chaos of 40 languages. They can�t teach with the fear of weapons and drugs in classrooms. As shown in Denver and in much of the USA, one in five teachers quit out of complete frustration.

It doesn�t stop there. Across the nation, a similar pattern emerges. �While Georgia high school seniors are graduating this month, they are missing almost half of their ninth grade classmates from 2001,� an Albany Herald, Albany, Georgia editorial stated. �Only 58 percent graduated. Only 47 percent blacks, 42 percent Hispanics and only 32 percent of American Indians graduated�with such high rates of students failing from high school, the growing expense of incarceration is easily understood. A study showed that not graduating triples a person�s chances of being jailed.�

The Herald continued, �Who would operate a business in which they could count on only half the products being acceptable? What bakery would be satisfied with only half its goods passing standards? How long would it last?�

If you look out at the 1.3 million illegal alien kids attending our schools across the nation, you can�t help but feel frustration for your own community. It mushrooms all over America. This Republic cannot and will not last much longer with a functionally illiterate underclass. A community�s chances for advancement are drastically degraded in proportion to the school dropout rate. One of the greatest threats to our nation is the exploding number of youth unprepared for the rest of their lives. Instead of a shining contribution to our society, these uneducated youth become liabilities in the work place, birth place, welfare lines, homeless shelters, alcoholic rehab and drug addiction centers.

What can be done? We must insist that our publicly elected leaders, first of all, stop the illegal alien invasion. We cannot survive it much longer. It creates a non-viable underclass, which in time will create hopelessness for millions. It will also create violence as their numbers grow. Second, we must insist that all people speak English in America as their first language. We cannot have foreign language television and radio stations that enhance non-assimilation. We must not allow multiple languages to be offered in any official public documents. We fracture our society and separate it into multiple language factions and an uneasy tension if we continue on this path with over 40 to 100 languages. Third, we must insist on 90 percent graduation rates from high school by ensuring that all students are here in this country legally and that they and their parents want to invest in the American Dream. Without the horrific confusion and costs of illegal alien students, we have a greater chance of realizing that kind of success.
