HAVE EVANGELICALS ABANDONED THEIR CHRISTIAN CONVICTIONS?

By Pastor Chuck Baldwin

As I wrote in my last column, virtually every American president and most every civil magistrate on every level has professed to be a Christian in one way or another. Of course, evangelicals have not regarded every politician's Christian profession as genuine. However, whenever an elected official convinces the evangelical community that he or she is a Christian, the Religious Right will give that person unyielding support.

However, to give any politician unwavering support based simply upon a religious profession is a tragic mistake! As I have stated before, our support for any elected office holder should be based solely upon their fidelity to America's founding principles, which are expressed in the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Unfortunately, many Christians have ignored repeated unconstitutional conduct committed by "Christian" politicians. It appears that while their ears are open to a politician's Christian rhetoric, their eyes are sealed shut to their unchristian actions.

For example, how would the average Evangelical feel if they learned that a professing Christian politician had appointed numerous open homosexuals to high public office and had provided federal funds to pay for insurance premiums and even travel expenses for homosexual partners? Would he or she continue to give such a politician their support?

What would the average Evangelical do if he discovered that a professing Christian politician actually increased federal funding for abortion-providing agencies and refused to take legal abortifacients off pharmacy shelves? Would he or she continue to give such a politician their support?

What would the average Evangelical do if he discovered that a professing Christian politician said that Christians and members of pagan religions worship the same god? Would he or she continue to give such a politician their support?

Do not all true Christians know and believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the only way to God the Father? What would the average Evangelical do if he discovered that a professing Christian politician said, "We have different routes of getting to the Almighty"? Would he or she continue to give such a politician their support?

Of course, the answer to these questions is an astounding "yes," because President George W. Bush has done or said all of the above, yet he continues to enjoy the unflinching support of many evangelical believers. By doing so, have they not abandoned their Christian convictions on the altar of political expediency?
