In the long war between good and evil which began in the Garden of Eden, there have been many ups and downs, advances and retreats. We have seen in our day a significant advance of evil in our land. But the battle is not over. For example, eleven days ago on December 20th, President Trump signed a significant Executive Order that didn’t receive much attention in the press (no surprise there). The order declared,
“a national emergency with respect to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States posed by serious human rights abuse and corruption around the world.

The order blocks the property and interests in property of persons listed in the Annex to the order. It also blocks the property and interests in property of any foreign person determined by the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Attorney General:
- to be responsible for or complicit in, or to have directly or indirectly engaged in, serious human rights abuse;
- to be a current or former government official, or a person acting for or on behalf of such an official, who is responsible for or complicit in, or has directly or indirectly engaged in:
(a) corruption, including the misappropriation of state assets, the expropriation of private assets for personal gain, corruption related to government contracts or the extraction of natural resources, or bribery;” Whitehouse.gov
Let’s see, could that include Hillary Clinton in the Uranium One deal, selling 20% of America’s Uranium to Russia for an estimated 100 million dollars? Or, how about Senator Harry Reid with the deal concocted with the Chinese to steal the Bundy’s land in Nevada for a solar farm? The list of those whose assets may be frozen is long and I think rather encouraging. It is the next phase in draining the swamp.
The battle for righteousness has a long history and continually requires a rising generation who will take up the mantle and continue that battle. In our day we are in dire need of warriors in this battle; those who are not intimidated by the enemy of our souls, those who will not be thrown off course by the persecution that inevitably comes against the warrior, those who will fight the good fight to the very end.
To raise that army, we need powerful role models which we can follow, those whose lives were tested in the fires of adversity, those who did not shirk on the battle field, those whose faith grew stronger as they fought the good fight.
This morning we begin anew in the Year of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ 2018 (Maranatha, even so come Lord Jesus). Our study is a man who meets all those qualifications – the Old Testament hero Joshua. This is a man who fought the good fight in his day and has a great deal to teach us today about the fight which lies before us for truth, righteousness and justice.
