LAYING ON OF HANDS
PART 1

We have seen parts of the church that follow scriptural doctrines to the tee and we have seen some parts of the church that ignores half of what Jesus has called us to do.

I was raised Baptist and what I was taught growing up made it very difficult to understand why anybody wanted to be a Christian. You weren’t supposed to prosper, you would not be healed if you got sick, because God was teaching you something and speaking in tongues was of the devil and the list goes on. There are some denominations that don’t even teach that you have to be saved to get into heaven.

One key factor that most churches forget is what God has directed the church to do: Deuteronomy 28:1 “And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:” We can not expect God to bless al that we do unless we do what God has commanded us to do. This quote is from the Old Testament and many believe, wrongly, that the Old Testament is only for the Jews. They have forgotten that we have been adopted into the family of God, which makes everything that He told the Jews is for the church as well. But any way, we can go to the New Testament and see if Jesus gave any commandments for the church. Mark 16:17 “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

(18) They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

This may be where the church got confused about speaking in tongues. But What I want you to see is the last eleven words that Jesus spoke on this earth; ‘they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover’. Jesus can not lie, so there has to be something to the laying on of hands. One problem I believe we see with following this command is there are those who mistakenly believe that it is a power within themselves that heals and they don’t believe that man has that type of power. To an extent , it is a power on the inside of you, not you, but the kingdom of God. God works through men to establish His will.

Many denominations do not teach this part of Jesus’ command to the church. Even Billy Graham became aware of this one say when he had someone ask him to lay hands on him for healing. Billy Graham just cried and said I don’t know what to do. With all respect to Mr. Graham, it is simple; Jesus said, ‘they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover’. It is really that simple. It is NOT any power that is yours that is doing it, it is the power of God working through you. Some may say, What if they don’t get healed. This is not your responsibility. Your responsibility is to lay hands on the people. If they refuse to receive the healing, that is not your fault. If they refuse to believe that they will be healed, that is not your fault. Jesus did say to those that He healed, “Be it done unto you ACCORDING TO YOUR FAITH.” God is gracious god and wants to heal all that are sick. God worked through Jesus. Even though he was the Son of God, He still relied on God to do the healing. He did NOTHING that we can’t do, nothing! Many in the church will argue that point, but Jesus Himself stated; John 14:12 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

We have to remember that we are His body on this earth and have been given authority to do His works for Him. Our job is to be obedient. We have seen believers cast out demons by telling them to leave, Jesus did that. He told us “In my name shall they cast out devils”, the ‘they’ in there are those that believe in Jesus. Most denominations won’t do that because they don’t want to make the devil mad. They make the devil mad by just being alive, so showing that you have authority over him can only make a good situation better. But Jesus said that we would do that, why aren’t we? Have we forgotten that God is the one who works the miracles but can only do so when we work with Him?

Mark 16:20 “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.”

God has told us through scripture how He does things and that is the only way He does things. Many try to figure out how God does things. That is only a waste of time. Just find out what God wants us to do and do it. Why question whether Jesus is telling the truth or not? Numbers 23:19 “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” You either believe that or not.

One thing that we should look at is whether the laying on of hands is a doctrine of the church. The first doctrine out of this chapter we see is spreading the gospel; Mark 16:15 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” God loves everybody and is not willing for anyone to perish.

The second doctrine we see is the doctrine of baptism; Mark 16:16 “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;, most churches practice this doctrine, some sprinkle, some submerge, but most churches baptize: but he that believeth not shall be damned.” There is no hope for those that do not believe. No matter how good of a person you are, only belief in Jesus will get you to heaven.

Mark 16:17 “And these signs shall follow them that believe;, Jesus is telling us here that we should have an expectation of success because we believe in Him. In my name shall they cast out devils;, Jesus is telling us how we are to confront the devil, using His Name. Some denominations form a committee and do a 4 month study to determine IF a person is being influenced by, or possessed by the devil. We never saw Jesus do this. He had discernment and we are to have it also and cast out demons when confronted by them. - they shall speak with new tongues;”. So much of the church runs from this doctrine. Why I don’t know. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 14:2 “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” We have to be concerned with ALL that Jesus has given us. Praying in the Spirit will allow the Spirit to speak through you. Praying in the Spirit allows you to build yourself up in God, you bypass your own understanding and pray what needs to be prayed to get the results that you are looking for. The Body of Christ has to believe AND obey all that Jesus said we are supposed to do, not just part of it.

Mark 16:18 “They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them;, This does not mean that you purposely handle a poisonous snake and hope it doesn’t bite you as some people believe. Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake but it did not hurt him. There have been many stories where a missionary ate food that had been poisoned but it did not hurt them. This is a promise of divine protection for those that are doing what God has called us to do. – Now we take note of the last words that Jesus spoke while He was on this earth - they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

We need to question men and their beliefs (evolution). It is our responsibility to check out mans beliefs by searching scripture to verify what they are teaching is what the Bible teaches. I’ve heard preachers say that God put a sickness on sister so-and-so to teacher her something, but the Bible says that God uses the Holy Spirit to teach us. Who are we to believe? The preacher or the Bible. I’ve heard preachers say that to be humble you have to be poor, but the Bible says that everything that I set my hand to will be blessed and that I will be the head and not the tail. Do I believe the preacher or do I believe the Bible. Preachers have said that some sicknesses are unto death and if the doctor says you’re going to die, you’re going to die, but the Bible says that by His stripes I AM healed, the Bible says “they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover”, do I believe the preacher or do I believe the Bible? I believe that I will believe the Bible on ALL of those matters.

As the church we are to obey the head of the church, Jesus, not men or the ideas that they have. How can we be blessed if we do not follow the doctrines that God has established for the church? The blessing from God will only come when we are doing what God has called us to do, THE WAY GOD HAS CALLED US TO DO IT!

The 15th chapter of Matthew speaks of how mean say that they worship Jesus, yet they teach their own doctrines and ignore God’s doctrines. Matthew 15:6 “. . . Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.” Many churches do things differently, but when they refuse to do things God’s way, you won’t ever receive anything from God. God watches over HIS Word to perform it, not men’s word. John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Notice it says His commandments, not men’s commandments.

Hebrews 6:1 “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

(2) Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” We have come to a point in the church where all things need to be taught to it again. Paul had this same problem in his day; Hebrews 5:12 “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.” Some churches have never seen anyone healed and it is ONLY because it has never been taught and believed. We should stay away from churches that refuse to teach the full gospel of Christ. You can’t pick and chose what you want to believe. 2 John 1:9 “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

(10) If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:” We have a candidate running for the presidency of the United States that claims that he is a committed Christian, but he has always voted for abortion, believes that an unwanted pregnancy is a punishment and if a baby survives an abortion it should be left on the table to die. He was appalled at the Supreme Courts decision to uphold the partial birth abortion ban. He believes that homosexuals have the right to marry and adopt children. ALL of these things are against God’s word and he should be shunned because of his refusal to obey the Word of God as the Christian he claims to be.

Remember that the devil hates man and wants you to be sick and die. God, however, loves us and has set the doctrine of laying on of hands so that we will be well and prosper as our soul prospers. God wants us sanctified wholly, spirit, soul and body. He is the Lord that heals us. The devil will make every excuse as to why you shouldn’t or don’t have to lay hands on somebody. 1 Timothy 4:1 “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;” Any teaching that the laying on of hands is not for today is nothing more than a doctrine of man and should be ignored.

1 Timothy 4:12 “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

(13) Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.” (14) Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.” The gift which he received by the laying on of hands was the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost confirms the Word with signs following. Notice that it is the Holy Ghost that confirms the Word, all we have to do is to obey.

All scripture is KJV unless otherwise noted.
