THERE IS NO FIGHT IN THE OLD DOG

Oh, the old gray mare, she ain't what she used to be,
Many long years ago.

I remember my Dad strumming his guitar and singing that song when I was a young boy. I know it may seem like folk-lore to you, but it always takes me back to a simpler time when, as Michael Savage would say, “the chrome was thick and the women were straight.”

I miss those simple days. I miss them for my kids. Days when we ran the streets till the sun went down and our parents didn’t worry about us being molested. I remember when we knew every family on the street, and they called us by name. I remember when we spent all day playing ball without an adult in sight…when “safe or out” was determined by the biggest guy on the field.

We didn’t expect adults to organize and umpire our pick-up games, and we knew when the last out was made, who won and who lost. We bloodied each other’s noses, ate fishing worms on a dare, and went to church on Sunday.

Everyone did…go to church that is. Parents stayed married “for the kids,” only “slutty” girls “did it,”, and a shotgun wedding was the answer for out-of-wedlock- pregnancy.

But that was the early sixties, before America lost her way. Will there ever be a time like the sixties again? Somewhere between The Beatles and Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones, America’s TV hosts transitioned from Dick Clark to Jerry Springer.

Americans no longer share a common set of values.

I remember as a young boy walking into my elementary school in 1961 and reading the Ten Commandments that hung in the foyer. It never struck me as odd that those same tablets were hung on the wall at church and on the refrigerator in our home.

Back then, they taught us the same values everywhere we went. But that was before multi-culturalism replaced the Decalogue.

Permit me to digress…I’ll reconnect the dots as we progress.

I remember walking beside my father one afternoon as he grabbed a shovel and a rifle and headed toward our garden. My brother Dan tagged along with us as we prepared to dig a hole for our dog.

“What are we doing Dad?” I nervously asked, fearful that the answer was what I suspected it to be.

“It is time for us to put Pawsie, down, boys. All dogs reach the point when they lose their bite. Once they lose their bite they soon lose their bark. Once they lose their bite it is only a matter of time until they aren’t really dogs anymore. There is nothing sadder than a once-brave animal that no longer commands respect. There is no fight in the old dog.”

The Church used to be the watchdog of the culture. It set the tempo, laid the ground rules, and commanded the respect of the community. Today, it has no bark and it has no bite. Every problem we see in America has occurred with the capitulation of The Church.

America is on fire and the church leadership is nowhere to be found. They cannot bite, and they refuse to bark. They serve a very anemic Jesus.

“His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.” -Is 56

Abandonment theology has doomed America to the ash heap of history.

"Abandonment Theology describes a faith which deceptively pawns itself off as Christianity by operating in the name of Christ, but which produces fruits destructive to America's God-given freedoms. It comprises what is left today of the militant, power-filled, full-dimensional Christian faith of America's Founders after decades of erosion, watering down and trivializing of God's action mandates by America's Abandonment Clergy. It is a "feel good" theology that patronizes Jesus Christ and thereby gains legitimacy, while at the same time produces disobedience to the commands of God and desertion of Christian duty." -John Chalfant

Below is the type of bilge I hear from readers every time I write a commentary.

“Stop fighting so hard Coach. There is nothing you can do about it. The Bible predicts everything that we see happening in America today. God is in charge. He is about to take us out of this mess. Do you celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday or Sunday?”

Pardon me for being so blunt, but sometimes I feel like climbing into my computer and popping them right in the mouth. When did Christianity become a religion of defeat?

We have lost the forty-year battle over abortion. We have ceded control of our public schools to the atheists. We are losing the fight to hold the line on the sanctity of marriage. We have permitted the politicians to rename us “conservatives” rather than Christians.

“We are just passing through, Brother Dave. This old world is not our home. You are just fighting the inevitable.” They make me wanna barf.

Let me ask you a question? What would America look like today if “The Church” had stood up and pushed back when:

In 1962 prayer was removed from our schools?
In 1962 Bible reading was removed?
In 1966 porn was legalized?
In 1973 abortion rights were established?
In 1980 they ripped the 10 Commandments off of the school house wall?

Is that the way the Lord planned it or have we tucked tail and run in the face of adversity?

Our abandonment of the battle for truth has caused Christianity to morph into a religion of slogans that fit on bumper stickers. “Got God?” “Jesus is my co-pilot.” “Follow me to church.”

“In event of the rapture this car will be empty.”

We’ve lost our bite.

To substantiate this truth look no farther than the humanistic, me-centered “worship” songs now being song in the modern evangellyfish church. Sissified songs sung by toothless poodles.

The Black-robed Regiment led the battle for liberty in our War for Independence. Early American-Christians did not sit in padded pews and pray for an immediate evacuation. They sang songs of victory and fought to “Occupy until He returns.”

Stand up stand up for Jesus you soldiers of the cross”
Onward Christian Soldiers marching as to war”
Keep on the Firing Line.”
Glory Halleluiah, His truth is marching on.”

Today, those songs are called “hymns”…old-fashioned…traditional. There is no fight in the church.

There is no bite in the dog. There is no victory in Jesus. Those hymns should shame us.

“And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matt. 28

I refuse to roll over and let them have us. If the church doesn’t man-up our granddaughters will be wearing burkas. But, I suppose that is the way the Lord planned it…

What is the unspoken message of today’s passive church? Satan is stronger than Jesus; so are Mohammed, and atheists, and secularists…and the Supreme Court.

“All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth!” He is still all-powerful. Why do His followers act like He is so weak?

“This old world is doomed, Brother Dave.” -Self-fulfilled prophecy.

“Christians have no teeth. They can’t even bark.”

Put that on a bumper-sticker.
