BUILDING ON LIES

God is not a man, that He should lie (Numbers 23:19). And it looks like man is not God, that he should tell the truth.

Last week we discovered that news anchor Brian Williams reported “news” that simply wasn’t true—especially those parts about him having all kinds of adventures. Maybe he took Indiana Jones movies a bit too much to heart. Maybe he was only trying to make the news more interesting. Whatever his reasons, he wound up as a big-time laughing stock.

But he wasn’t the first to pass off lies as news. Throughout the 1930s, New York Times “reporter” Walter Duranty served as Josef Stalin’s cheerleader, writing one glowing report after another about the Soviet dictator’s marvelous transformation of his country into a workers’ paradise. Man-made famine in the Ukraine, causing millions of people to starve to death? Never happened, said Duranty. Purges? Gulags? Never happened, said Duranty. And he won a Pulitzer for all those whoppers, which the Pulitzer Committee refuses, to this day, to revoke—although it has been proved beyond even a shadow of a doubt that Duranty’s reports were lies.

And then, of course, there was Dan Rather pretending to be in Afghanistan when he wasn’t, and finally going down in flames because of his confessedly “fake but accurate” reporting—lying, actually—about George W. Bush’s National Guard service.

We have for many years been forming our view of the world around what the noozies tell us. Much of it was lies. We’ll never know how much, if any, was the truth.

I am convinced that the extreme ungodliness and moral decay of our world today is due to our addiction to lying.

Our ruling class, for the past several years, has called on us to award to the government vast new powers, and to pay higher and higher taxes, and to give up great big chunks of our personal freedom, in order to Save the Planet from Global Warming. If we don’t give them what they ask for, we’re all gonna die. Our cities will be under water, no more polar bears, all because we won’t cough up a carbon tax. And let them tell us where to live, what to eat, what to drive, etc.

But a few days ago, The Telegraph—thank the Lord for British newspapers—reported that “The fiddling with temperature data is the biggest science scandal ever.” Added meteorologist Anthony Watts, president of Intelli Weather Inc., “In the business and trading world, people go to jail for such manipulations of data.”

Yup—all lies. Because Saving the Planet provides an excuse for just about anything, they will do everything in their power to make people believe in Global Warming (known as Climate Change, when it’s cold). They took the temperature readings at various weather stations around the world and simply changed them into higher numbers. Presto! The gol-darn warmest year in history, according to the UN.

The frustrating thing is, we have known for years that it’s all a big, fat scam. Climategate made it indisputably clear: thousands and thousands of emails hacked from the East Anglia University computers, the nerve center of Climate Science, depicting the scientists hatching plots to “hide the decline” in warming, discussing how to get their critics’ funds cut off and their kids kicked out of college, and other equally scientific matters. But of course the Walter Duranty-Dan Rather-Brian Williams news media buried the Climategate story. If you were getting your news from their TV broadcasts, you never even heard of Climategate.

This is the way a civilization dies: popular perceptions based on lies, public policies based on lies, reality replaced by “narrative.” As in “hands up, don’t shoot.”

It gets ugly, when the people find out that it’s all lies. Is there a guillotine manufacturing company that I can buy stock in?

Getting caught a few times may stop Brian Williams. Getting caught innumerable times has not even slowed down the Climate Change crowd. Duranty’s Pulitzer still decorates the offices of The New York Times.

Then there are the Obama administration’s jobless numbers—

But I don’t think I know anybody who ever believed those lies.
