It was a Garland, Texas traffic officer who this past Sunday ended with a .45 caliber Glock what would have been the first successful ISIS-inspired terrorist attack on American soil. Two hundred people could have been killed by two heavily armed terrorists but were saved by the actions of that officer. The officer should be celebrated nationwide, promoted immediately, and established as a model for how Americans deal with terrorists. Although we will never see it from Barak Obama, an honorable President would hold up the heroic example of this officer as the American way.

The message should be loud and clear to cowards who would pray upon innocents: Dare come to America’s shores, bring your weapons, and experience what freedom in the form of the Second Amendment can do for you. An armed America is an America that can defend its freedom efficiently and effectively. Cowardly murder of unarmed innocents may occur with ease in nations that have disarmed their citizenry, but not here where each American has a right to bear arms and can become in a “minute man.” For generations, our people have enjoyed the right to bear arms. Each of us is a freedom defense unit, prudently invested with the sovereignty to defend liberty with arms if under violent assault. ISIS terrorists should understand that whenever and wherever they appear in this country, they will find no safe haven because beyond the police, beyond the military, the very people they aim to kill will aim right back at them.

Without a moment’s hesitation and with precise aim, the Garland, Texas traffic officer sent to oblivion two radical Islamists intent on killing those who dared criticize the prophet Mohammed. He must be one incredible shot. Four other SWAT team members followed suit using high-powered rifles on the terrorists, ensuring their prompt demise. The terrorists, Elton Simpson and Nadir Sofi, wore body armor and carried assault rifles, to no avail.

While ISIS demands reverence for the Prophet Mohammad, they show absolute intolerance for those of any other faith and routinely kill those who do not follow their brand of radical Islam and pledge allegiance to their leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Garland’s traffic officer sets the American standard for how we should wage war on terror, putting those who would kill us and suppress our freedoms in the grave before they put us there. Freedom can prevail against tyranny only upon such a solid foundation as the exercise of Second Amendment rights.

In this country, we must always remember that the First Amendment stands as a bulwark of freedom, forbidding state action to censor the right of those who wish to communicate their views, especially views that others find repulsive. It is here where freedom of conscience and freedom of speech are protected for all. Those who would take offense at the message of a speaker have the equally unalienable right to communicate their contrary views, but they have no right to silence the message that offends them.

Under the First Amendment, each person may rest assured that his or her own freedom to dissent is protected. With each person’s right to dissent comes the likelihood that views expressed will not be appreciated by others, that debate will sometimes be caustic and robust, but one need only avoid the speaker and the message to end the offense. Much as I personally find repulsive the notion of desecrating the God of any people, I would defend the American Freedom Defense Initiative’s right to satirize and criticize the Prophet Muhammad just as much as I would the right of any other group to satirize and criticize my own God, because I understand fundamentally that no one’s freedom is safe unless everyone’s freedom is protected “within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others,” as Thomas Jefferson so eloquently put it in his letter to Benjamin Rush of April 21, 1803.

Here, we can have a haven of freedom that is the envy of the world but only if we are willing to do, as the Garland, Texas traffic officer did, and eliminate summarily those who aim to kill those with whom they disagree.
