WHY NOT THEISTIC EVOLUTION?

Responses to my recent column, Christianity Blind Faith or Reason, were overwhelmingly positive. Discoveries in science that fit the biblical account of creation in Genesis are making it ever harder for people to defend a "Big Bang Theory" that says matter created itself and life was created spontaneously from non-living material. However some people still ask "why not theistic evolution"? If evolution couldnt happen naturally on its own, might not God have created that first spark of life and then used evolution to finish the process? No way! Evolution not only contradicts the scriptural account of creation but it also runs counter to the "personality" of God as revealed to us in Scripture by God Himself. Most importantly, if evolution is true, it renders Jesus death on the cross meaningless.

Whether one wants to believe in a six day creation or not, it is a clear scriptural teaching. Some people take a "who cares" attitude on this topic, but it really is important because the credibility of Gods Word is at stake. After all, if we cant believe what God states so clearly in Genesis, how can we believe anything He says in Scripture? Jesus said about Moses "But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?" (John 5:47) Genesis is the foundation on which the rest of Scripture stands. This foundational book is quoted or alluded to hundreds of times in both the Old and New Testaments. If we find deceit, contradictions, or outright falsities in Genesis or anywhere else in the Bible, it cannot be the Word of God and it is a worthless book undeserving of our trust.

Rather than beginning with God as the foundation for our thinking, people are trying to "fit" Gods Word into the worlds philosophies. One of the ways they do this is by saying that we can believe that both the Bible and evolution are true. But this is impossible because a close study will show us that these two belief systems are polar opposites!

The biblical account reports a six day creation while evolution is a belief in billions of years. The Bible says that man brought death into the world through sin while evolution says death brought man into the world. God made the oceans before land according to Scripture, but evolution says land came before oceans. Scripture says light was created before the sun; evolution says the sun came first. God made plants before the sun and birds before reptiles. According to evolution theory the sun came before plants and reptiles before birds. Evolution says the atmosphere is above the water whereas God says the atmosphere is between two layers of water. Gods Word says marine mammals came before the land mammals where evolution states the exact opposite. There are many more such comparisons that we could make. The Bible and evolution are simply not compatible. They cant both be right. One of them is clearly wrong!

Evolution calls for long periods of time rather than accepting the literal 24- hour days as stated in Genesis. Many people think maybe God meant that a day was a million or a billion years long. While this theory has many flaws, one of the biggest is that it makes God a liar. He either deceived us by calling something a "day" that really wasnt a "day" or He deceived us about the order in which he made his creation or both. Scripture says that God made the plants one day before the sun. Now if that was a normal 24-hour day, no problem. But how could the plants have survived without the sun for millions or billions of years? God also said that he created plants before insects. Now how did plants that require pollination to reproduce survive without the bees and other insects for millions or billions of years?

Would the loving God of the Bible, who created man for want of a personal relationship with him, have used a system of suffering, disease and death to bring about life for purpose of a loving relationship? I dont think so!

"{Natural} selection is the blindest, and most cruel way of evolving new species, and more and more complex and refined organismsThe struggle for life and elimination of the weakest is a horrible process, against which our whole modern ethics revolts. An ideal society is a non-selective society, one where the weak is protected; which is exactly the reverse of the so-called natural law. I am surprised that a Christian would defend the idea that this is the process which God more or less set up in order to have evolution." Nobel Prize Winning Biologist Jacques Monod

I agree Jacques! Now if an evolutionist can see that this method is cruel and does not fit the attributes of the God that Christians profess to believe in, then how come so many Christians cant see it?

What Christians really need to understand is that if evolution is true, Jesus death on the cross was in vain. The Bible tells us that mans sin brought suffering and death into the world. Evolution tells us that death brought man into the world. What did Jesus come to save us from if there was already death before sin? The evolution theory makes Jesus life a lie.

"Christianity has fought, still fights, and will fight science to the desperate end over evolution, because evolution destroys utterly and finally the very reason Jesus earthly life was supposedly made necessary. Destroy Adam and Eve and the original sin, and in the rubble you will find the sorry remains of the son of god. Take away the meaning of his death. If Jesus was not the redeemer that died for our sins, and this is what evolution means, then Christianity is nothing." G. Richard Bozarth, "The Meaning Of Evolution", American Atheist, Sept. 20, 1979 p. 30

Bozarth hit the nail on the head. Evolution means that Jesus did not die for our sins and that Christianity is nothing.

Much of the reason that the church has become so irrelevant in our time is because back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries many theologians abandoned the traditional interpretation of Genesis. According to Jonathan Sarfati, in "Refusing Compromise" there was more resistance to an ancient age of the world and to organic evolution from some geologists and scientists than from theologians. Since so many ministers and priests have been educated in Christian institutions that accommodate the Bible to current "scientific" claims when there appeared to be a conflict, the church has been enfeebled. When even the church looks to the world first, she has made herself irrelevant. If we go against the plain teaching of Scripture in one area, how can we expect people to accept any other parts of Scripture as true?

If the Bible is really the Word of God, then should it not be the standard by which we judge all things? One of the greatest tragedies of our time is that the intellectual Christian is all but dead. We dont read and know very little about our own faith. Christians need to pray more and read their Bible more. There is no excuse for our ignorance because there is so much help out there today. We have Christian apologists like Kent Hovind of Creation Science Evangelism and Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis who can be of tremendous help. Please check out their materials and support their ministries so that the truth can be made available to more people. You will see that there is NO reason to doubt the Bible and a lot of reason to KNOW that it is the truth from cover to cover.

A concerted effort has been underway for some time to destroy the foundation of freedom upon which our nation was built. Our founding document, the "Declaration of Independence" states our rights come from our Creator. It is our Creator then who is the only source of law and it is Him who makes the rules for all of life. ALL are bound by His laws, including kings and presidents! Isnt it interesting that our founding document cannot be read in some classrooms today? Why would that be?

It has long been a goal of government to destroy Christianity through government schooling. Those in control of government want to play god and make up their own rules in order to empower and glorify themselves. In order to get us to abandon our unalienable rights under the one true God, and to consider them instead as "privileges" that government can give or take away at their own pleasure, they must convince us that God is dead. What better way to do that than to take away the glory of His creation?

"Prove all things: hold fast what is good." (1 Thess. 5:21) All things are to be tested against Scripture not to the ways of this world. What is good (biblical) is to be embraced; what is evil (unbiblical) is to be shunned. The Bereans even tested the Apostle Pauls teachings against Scripture (Acts 17:11). How much more so should we be testing teachings against Scripture in our own time?

Does evolution, even the theistic variety, when tested against Scripture reveal itself as truth? Hardly! "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free", says Jesus. (John 8:31,32)
