SELF INDULGENT NARCISSISM

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. -Luke 1:14-15

Sin is not just an ungodly act, but the results of being a Self Indulgent Narcissist

Sin is selfish, self-centered, self-indulgent, self-motivated, self-gratifying, self-pitying and self destructive! Unfortunately, sin brought forth by a Self Indulgent Narcissist always hurts others who associate with them, and often the sin of a Self Indulgent Narcissist can destroy the lives of many, not only the narcissist.

Remember the "me" generation sayings like "go ahead, you're worth it", "go for the gusto", "if it feels good, do it", "take care of number one", "you can't please everyone, so just please yourself" and "to thine own self be true"? Of course, in our society for several years now, nothing is ever really our own fault! It's " the way our parents reared us, "It's because of poverty", "because my parents were drunkards or perhaps" it's because we were abused as a child", or a real good one these days is "because my great, great, great grandparents were slaves"!, and on and on it goes. Any excuse we can find to indulge in self-pity to, or in any other way to explain away our Self Indulgent Narcissism!

I committed adultery because "my spouse doesn't love me anymore!", he/she is no longer romantically inclined toward me", I commit fornication because "my parents don't care", or because "everybody else does it, so why can't I?" I steal with a gun or with a "lying pen" for welfare cheats because I want things I don't have.

To sin has been in the basic nature of man ever since Eve was drawn into being a Self Indulgent Narcissist by her own lusts of the fruit Satan offered her in the garden. That original act of Self Indulgent Narcissism has destroyed the lives and souls of millions!

You Might say "well, preacher, a "little" Self Indulgent Narcissism can't hurt anybody". Really? Let's see an example that will prove that to be a false concept. In the Book of Joshua , you will find the exploits of Israel under Joshua the son of Nun as their leader. In Chapter 6, Joshua was instructed as to how to conquer and destroy Jerico! They were to leave nothing and no one alive! Man, woman, child or animal! They were strictly instructed to take or keep nothing from this "cursed" city except treasures that were to be consecrated unto the Lord or to the Lord's treasury.

Now imagine, a city filled with thousands of people, animals and billions of dollars worth of merchandise! Who would ever know, or even care, if someone kept just a "little" of the wealth? Well, that seems to be just what Achan, the son of Carmi thought also. Out of all the wealth of this great city, Achan had just taken one suit of clothes, a little silver and a piece of gold. Surely no big deal! Right? Well, because of this little bit of Self Indulgent Narcissism, God counted the sin against all of Israel and 36 men died! Just a little Self Indulgent Narcissism! No big deal.

Kind of like King David's "one night fling" or "extra marital affair" with Bathsheba caused him to commit murder and cursed his heirs forever. Or when Satan enticed David to do an ungodly census -- seventy thousand innocents died because of this "little" misjudgment on David's part. Or when Hezekiah indulged himself in a little Self Indulgent Narcissism in Isaiah 39 and cause his people to go into captivity in Babylon. Even after Isaiah told him about the consequences of his selfish, self-centered, Self Indulgent Narcissism, his reply was he didn't care! As long as there was peace and truth in his days. Hezekiah was truly a Self Indulgent Narcissist!

Christ was tempted as we are all tempted, (Heb. 4:15) yet did not sin because he did not have the lust of the world in Him to conceive and bring forth S.I.N. as we do (James 1:14). A little Self Indulgent Narcissism, or leaven as mentioned in I Cor. 5:6 and Gal. 5:9 if not purged, will leaven, cause the whole lump (society)to be full of Self Indulgent Narcissism! America is full proof of that! And for a society to tolerate and compromise with evil is itself a Self Indulgent Narcissistic act that will destroy all of society! (Ps. 156:34-42)

Let us all constantly purge ourselves of any unclean thing (fleshly, worldly lust) that is contrary to God's moral standards, so as not to curse ourselves and others! (I Cor 5:7) Let us strive to be holy as He is holy. (I Pet. 1:15) for without holiness no man shall see Him. (Heb. 12:14)

As Sir Thomas Browne observed, "As sins proceed, they ever multiply; and like figures in arithmetic, the last stands for more than they all that went before it."
