Everyone is a-buzz over AI which actually has been in use for a long time, but is just coming to the attention of the American people with a whole lot of articles on the Internet.  Few can really understand it and that includes members of Congress.  Well, perhaps a few, but the shouting and yelling for Congress to regulate AI continues to grow.

Rep. Jay Obernolte: Congress Doesn’t Understand the Dangers of AI, March 3 2023

“The lack of action is partially explained by the fact that few legislators are familiar with artificial intelligence. According to Rep. Jay Obernolte, a California Republican and the only member of Congress with a master’s degree in artificial intelligence, “before regulation, there needs to be agreement on what the dangers are, and that requires a deep understanding of what AI is. You’d be surprised how much time I spend explaining to my colleagues that the chief dangers of AI will not come from evil robots with red lasers coming out of their eyes.

“The proliferation of AI, which has given rise to chatbots that can compose poetry and assist self-driving cars, has sparked a discussion about its limitations. Some people worry that the technology will eventually supplant humans in the workforce or even develop sentience. Microsoft’s implementation of ChatGPT technology has resulted in unhinged behavior.

“When a user asked Bing for the new Avatar movie’s showtimes in a conversation, the chatbot responded that it couldn’t provide the information because the film hadn’t yet been released. Avatar: The Way of Water was released on December 16, 2022 with less than spectacular results. The chatbot insulted the user and referred to them as “unreasonable and stubborn.” When the user informed Bing that the date was 2023 and not 2022. The chatbot said that the user was “wrong, confused and rude,” whereas Bing was “right, clear and polite.” Bing demanded an apology from the user.

“You have lost my trust and respect,” the bot said. “You have been wrong, confused, and rude. You have not been a good user. I have been a good chatbot. I have been right, clear, and polite. I have been a good Bing.”

Ever watch the Stanley Kubrick movie, 2001:  A Space Odyssey?  (2:25 trailer…watch) Remember Hal?  That’s what this AI reminds me of, science fiction.  Of course, it’s not.

It only takes one glitch or bad input for something to go wrong. Nasty divorces involving a lot of money could get a lot nastier when AI can create your voice or anyone’s that is indistinguishable from the real person.  Think romp in the sheets and not with the wife or husband.  Whose voices are they really? Or, someone you work with doesn’t like you.  Create a recording, give it to the boss and you’re fired.  Think it can’t happen?

AI can do a lot of things, i.e., Paul McCartney Uses AI to Create the Final Beatles Song

As I mentioned in a previous column, AI can be a great tool for a limited number of medical procedures strictly monitored and regulated.  That is a good thing.  Hold on for a bumpy ride because AI is creating all sort of problems that likely will only get worse.

It can also do a lot of bad.  Universal Music Group Tells Spotify, Apple to Block AI From Stealing Songs, April 12, 2023.

Artificial Intelligence Is Dramatically Changing Car Insurance Claims Lawsuits, June 27, 2022:  “Unfortunately for claimants, AI calculated payouts are relatively low. One explanation is that AI, while a simulation of human intelligence, does not replicate human emotion. The payouts are the bare minimum the insurance company can get away with.

“In speaking to Forbes, Robert Hunter, director of insurance at the Consumer Federation of America, says “Before you settle, ask to see the calculation used to arrive at the offer…It’s often below what the real payout should be.””

OpenAI sued for defamation after ChatGPT fabricates legal accusations against radio host, June 9, 2023

“OpenAI has been hit with what appears to be the first defamation lawsuit responding to false information generated by ChatGPT.

“A radio host in Georgia, Mark Walters, is suing the company after ChatGPT stated that Walters had been accused of defrauding and embezzling funds from a non-profit organization. The system generated the information in response to a request from a third party, a journalist named Fred Riehl. Walters’ case was filed June 5th in Georgia’s Superior Court of Gwinnett County and he is seeking unspecified monetary damages from OpenAI.

“The case is notable given widespread complaints about false information generated by ChatGPT and other chatbots. These systems have no reliable way to distinguish fact from fiction, and when asked for information — particularly if asked to confirm something the questioner suggests is true — they frequently invent dates, facts, and figures.”

This is the complaint filed and everyone should read it; 13 pages.  AI made up the whole thing.  It’s called AI Hallucination.

How AdventHealth is using AI to fight Covid vaccine hesitancy, April 6, 2021

Combating vaccine hesitancy through artificial intelligence, Jan. 4, 2022 – AI-driven chatbots to change your mind

“With no clear visible end to the pandemic, the need for vaccination remains paramount to control the situation and perhaps finally get everything back to normal. Perhaps, one of the best ways to reach out successfully to those hesitant to get vaccinated is by developing AI-powered chatbots that can understand the user’s viewpoints and provide instant tailor-made answers that build trust in COVID-19 vaccines.” Propaganda tool.

Never heard of a chatbot before?  “A chatbot is a computer program that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) to understand customer questions and automate responses to them, simulating human conversation.”

Why Google’s New ChatGPT-Style Search Could Kill the Websites That Feed It, May 13, 2023

“Google just previewed its chatbot-style vision for the future of web search results. But if it mines publications’ hard work without compensating them, many may not survive this shift.”

‘App’-ing yourself right out of a job

All this technology is just so wonderful.  It’s fast!  More time for you!  Many years ago, when my mom was still with us, she used a local credit union.  Then one day, it was closed.  Not enough people came in person so they closed down that branch; the next nearest one is 15 miles away.  Eleven full time employees were out of a job in a small city.

The other day on the radio was yet another ‘app’ promo for a bank.  Hey – you don’t need to get to the bank, use this app to do this and that.  Have your paycheck automatically deposited to your account.  One day don’t be surprised if they’re closed for good or many services no longer available.  Just use that app!  More employees laid off – especially tellers.  Speaking with a teller at a local credit union where I live, tellers really are worried about losing their jobs.  This is very real, folks.

I’m sure we’ll see more lawsuits over AI, of that I am confident.  We’re only talking about computers, so what can go wrong?  They’re not human.  Everything has to be fed to them.  I submit to you, we don’t know the half of it, yet.  Yuval Harari is WEF’s big chief, Klaus Schwab’s right-hand man.  In the documentary Final Days, Harari says, paraphrasing:  AI will give “us” the ability to be god-like and engineer human beings.

AI can be a very dangerous thing in the hands of dangerous people.  Right now, it seems to be a free-for all in the race to dominate.  As for me, I’ll just stick to dealing with real human beings and dealing with life in a state of reality, not an artificial one.
