The great president Ronald Wilson Reagan once said, “Without God America will be one nation under. It is amazing that, we live in a time when such a concerted effort is underway to totally wipe out the historic role of God and faith in our republic. Yet our national capitol, Washington, D.C., is filled with Christian oriented symbols that adorn its many buildings and monuments as an abiding evidence of God’s role in America’s great heritage. From the onetime hallowed halls of Congress, to the monuments, to nearly every landmark building, there are Biblical and religious quotations and images are inscribed as an official testimony to the true place God has in our nation’s birthright and great history. Engraved on the aluminum capstone of the Washington monument is the Latin phrase Laus Deo, which means “Praise be to God.” Lining the walls of the stairwell are carved tribute blocks that declare such biblical phrases as “holiness to the Lord”, “Search the Scriptures”; “The memory of the just is blessed”; and “Train up a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
The Father of our republic, George Washington declared, “No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States. Washington, like most of his founding father contemporaries understood that in order for the United States to remain a free republic with limited government, the people had to be of extremely good moral character. It was understood that a moral people with an understanding that their unalienable rights come from God would enjoy the blessings of liberty as long as they sought to live according to God’s good standards. It was also understood, that in order to maintain liberty, Godly standards they had to be passed down to succeeding generations along with a high quality of education.
In the Congressional House chamber is the inscription. “In God We Trust.” In the House chamber above the gallery door, stands a marble relief of Moses, surrounded by twenty-two other lawgivers. At the east entrance to the Senate chamber are the words Annuit Coeptis, which is Latin for “he has favored our undertakings.” The words “In God We Trust” are also written over the southern entrance. In the rotunda is the painting of “The Baptism of Pocahontas.” Also, in the rotunda is “The Embarkation of the Pilgrims praying on shipboard led by William Brewster. Clearly seen in an open Bible are the words, “God With Us” are inscribed on the sail of the ship.
In the Capital’s chapel is a stained glass window depicting George Washington in prayer under the inscription “This Nation Under God.” Also, the prayer from Psalm 16:1 is etched in the window, which states, “preserve me, God, for in Thee do I put my trust.”
The Supreme Court building has a number of places are images of Moses with the Ten Commandments. Moses is included among the great Lawgivers in Herman MacNeil’s marble sculpture group on the east front. As you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door and a display of the Ten Commandments is also engraved over the chair of the Chief Justice. Throughout our national capitol are many more references to God and numerous related symbols. When one considers the faith exhibited by the Founders and great Americans of succeeding generations their faith was obviously well founded. They understood that our merciful Creator would not destroy us because of our imperfections, but would honor our faith in Him, who would help us via Providential guidance to accomplish great things. The United States of America is proof of that fact.
Today, President Trump and many others including yours truly have high expectations for the future of our republic. But without God, America the beautiful will further devolve into a goofy second tier nation of former greatness. America, the choice is up to you. But I would that you choose wisely. For if it is God in which we trust, the benefits will be everlasting. God bless you, God bless America and may America bless God.
