Santa Fe, NM – “Today, House Minority Leader Rod Montoya, House Minority Whip Alan Martinez, and House Republican Caucus Chair Gail Armstrong sent a letter to Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver with concerns regarding the delay and request for additional time completing Representative Townsend’s Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) request regarding election integrity and voter registration data sets.
“It has been widely reported and confirmed by the Secretary of State website that 105,000 “voter registration outreach postcards” were sent to a mailing list that included unregistered and ineligible voters.
“In part, the representatives wrote: “Our primary concern with this practice is that your office lacks the ability to verify the citizenship status of the 105,000 individuals receiving these postcards. Staff at the Election Registration Information Center acknowledged in a recent phone call that it is virtually impossible to filter out noncitizens, including undocumented immigrants, from these datasets; ERIC’s acknowledgement mirrors the acknowledgement on your website that noncitizens likely received the post card. As a result, we believe noncitizens were included in this outreach effort, which may encourage them to illegally register to vote. Additionally, Representative Townsend asked some critical questions that your office did not answer, such as what processes exist at your office or local county clerks’ offices to filter out noncitizens who register to vote. This information is critical for us to assess the integrity of the voter registration process, and we expect a detailed response to his unanswered questions as well.”
